I just bought some Maha Rechargeable NiHm D cells. They are rated at 7500 mAh. Just for comparison, what is the mAh rating of a standard alkaline D Cell like an EverReady or a Duracell?
The typical D cell alkaline is rated about 18,000mA and a C cell is rated about 8,300mA. Hey who made that cool battery cheat sheet? Quickbeam? That is one of the pics we should put in an archive reference area.

But the rating is for very low currents. Using a D cell in a MaGlite with a 1A bulb will not give more than 8-9 Ah.
And D and C cells have a much worse high load behaviour than AA cells. Further the capacity is given to a discharge down to 0.6V/cell.
As PuLu noted it depends on the rate of ddrain on the battery. In the case of LED lights a alkaline cell should last longer. The alkaline cell can only be used once, unlkie NiMH which can be reused over and over.

In a 'normal' flashlight with a 1A bulb they should behave about equal, maybe the NiMh cell lasting longer.
