Battery groupings?

I'm starting to group my batteries according to its cycle (roughly) & also to specific flashlights.
Previously, I only group them based on their brand & capacities.
But recently, i have started to use certain cells for certain flashlights only, and i try my very best not to mix them up.

I am wondering if this is necessary..
Or does anyone else practice something similar?

In January of '12, I revamped my chargers and batteries, buying about 40 AAs, from various makers and 20 AAAs. I just numbered them when I took them out of the pack and wrote down the initial break-in results, along with the dates.

The Eneloops are all pretty close, so I don't worry about those too much. I'm now at 15 months and maybe in a year, I'll start checking them out and pairing them up, as they start to wear in/out a bit more, but right now, life's too short.

I recently dropped a bunch of crap cells off for recycling, I have about 12 now, from energizer, rayovac, and Duracell I really don't have much stuff running on batteries, flashlights last a long time on duraloops, Xbox controllers running on energizer 1400s with quite a long time before charging, all still come in around 1405 mAh I really have no issues with any of my cells. They are matched and numbered so I don't mix them up

I too seperate cells into sets for each light. Not sure if its required, but it makes since to me.

Yes. I have 16 NiMH AAAs for what were two 3 AAA torches, one high-lumen 3 AAA torch, and one low-lumen 3 AAA torch.

I opened the first 8 AAA packs after purchase, and started using them. 8 batteries and 6 places in torches doesn't go evenly.

The low-lumen flashlight stopped working after 8 months, so I now only have the high-lumen one.

Then one of the 8 batteries I had used stopped functioning, so I had seven AAAs for 3 AAA places.

Then, the other NiMHs waiting to be opened after a year had to be opened and used.... otherwise they would die from self-discharge....so I had to avoid the fresh 8 getting mixed up with the partly used 7 AAAs...:ohgeez::shakehead ....so I decided to paint Tipp-Ex (white corrector fluid) on the sides of 4 of the "new" AAAs near the middle, and on the other "new" 4 AAAs near the tops of the batteries:ohgeez:

A chain is only as strong as its weakest link. Having said that I prefer to know the capacities of my batteries by testing them and then grouping and using them based on similar capacities.
