I know that with rechargeable batteries they will last many more cycles the less you discharge them per cycle. Would the same thing be true for the discharge rate? If, for example, you discharge them at C/5 rather than C/1 will they last more cycles?

This is just speculation, but I had always operated under the assumption that:
Charge is 1 cycle, discharge is also 1 cycle...
A 2000mah battery has 2 cycles (charge/discharge)
A regular NiMH can last 1000 cycles
And that NiMH can supply approximately 1,000 Amps in its cycled lifetime (2000ma x 1000/2 cycles)...
So I would combine the charge and discharge current into and out of the battery, and then guage the accumulation as a toll on its life cycle...
Of course, this is pure speculation...
