The 4/3 A cells I bought came in a mixture of bare metal and two thicknesses of plastic wrapping. The thicker wrapping provided an overall thickness greater than CR123 batteries and an interference fit into energizer DB chambers that happily swallow CR123's and Sanyo A's.

From those numbers (and from similar charts on www.energizer.com) it appears that 4 AA together have a slightly higher diameter than 1 D cell, but it's pretty close. 4 AAs seem to fit in most D cell flashlight tubes, though.

Do most tubes have a little extra room, or are the published specs generally bigger than the batteries are in practice?

For a battery of diameter d the diameter of 4 together should be:

d * sqrt(2) + d

unless I'm doing my math wrong. The differences are only 1 or 2 mm but I'm curious if mods like this always work or if you sometimes run into space problems? I'm ignoring any battery holder that is inserted with the AAs.

You can add; B dia. 21.5 ht. 60. For all sizes, listed specs. can vary somewhat between different sources. The biggest difference will occur when comparing the sizes of bare cells with those of finished batteries.
