Am thinking of getting a BB 400 sandwich for my second minimag. I have a arc LS1 and was wondering how bright it is in comparison. My first minimag has a opalec and I want to improve the sickly beam of my second. If anyone will know it will be cpfe'rs. Thanks /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/help.gif

The BB will deliver 15 - 20% more current than the ARC (330-350mA vs 400mA). Get a premium Q3. I don't know what bin the ARC is, but I would guess that the output of the Q3 is at least 25% more (probably 40%). I love my ARC, but I love Wayne's cooking. Get one his sandwiches.

Guys, remember that 25% increase is barely perceptible unless you have something to compare with as a reference. A meaningful increase in light is 100%, yes that's right 100%. And it won't totally blow you away. Take 2 identical output lights, turn one on in a completely dark room, then turn on the other one and note how much the room got brighter. That's double the lumens. It's noticeable but it's not a big WOW. So while 40%, don't expect to be blown away. If you don't believe me, go ask Peter Gransee why he set up his dimmer the way he did originally on the LS4. He has modified it since then to get more "granularity".

Medix-

I wasn't sure if you were considering buying the BB400 with the Q3L upgrade, but I have the BB400 (Q3L) and the BB500, and they both outshine my Arc LSH-Premiums, but as kitelights inferred, Wayne's Sandwiches are being driven harder.

In fact, my BB400 with the Q3L upgrade is noticeably more whiter and brighter in appearance than my BB500. I highly recommend the BB400 (Q3L) - the size is the only issue since we are, of course, dealing with a 2AA MiniMag body.

The AA battery type and the long runtimes of the Badboys, not to mention reasonable cost, give these Sandwiches an advantageous position in comparison to the Arc LS. But then again, I still prefer to carry my Arc LSH-P simply because of its incredibly pocket-friendly size. My Sandwich equipped MiniMags fulfill my camping/hiking/general utility niche. They're that useful. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Yup. Just like our hearing, our eyes have a logarithmic response.

So a 25% difference in light is not much.

It's hard to compare the brightness of the BB400 to incandescents, mainly because those incans are usually tightly focused, whereas the BB400 in an NX05 isn't. Then you have the variant in the LS itself. I'm willing to guess it puts out at least 25 lumens with the Q3L upgrade, because it easily outbrightens a first generation Arc-LS that was running at spec and should be producing ~20 lumens... I do know one of my BB400Q3L modules I tested handed out 470 Lux on fresh NiMHs...

This is by no means any official test, but just my eyeballs personal opinion.

The BB400 appears to be about the same brightness as an L4 driven by only one CR123 battery.

My E1/KL4 puts out about as much Lux as my BB400Q3L (if not just a tad more so)...
