Best D Li-Ion cells?

Sorry if this has been covered before, but I couldn't find anything in the search. I'm looking to build a 2D mag, and am looking for the best protected D size Li-Ion cells out there. The cells will be facing probably 4.5-5A worth of current, so I don't want to take a chance with cheap cells. Thanks!

KD has their cells which are the cheapest and easiest to obtain. I am doing the same thing you are and am trying to source some Saft VL 34570 cells. In my research they are superior to the KD ones. There were also some that plasmaman got his hands on. As far as I know they aren't for sale anywhere.

This is correct, you will need a soft start switch to run a P5761 or ROP H bulb, the ROP L and WA1111 seem to run ok without a soft start. You may have a problem with the length of the two cells in a 2D Mag. If you install the AW soft start/three level switch you will gain a little space to fit the two Kai D cells but still need to cut down the tail spring.

Looks like I'll just go for the Kai cells, thanks for the replies! I'm surprised there aren't more options out there.

if you can get SAFT protected li-ion rechargable D's they would be "best" but neither cheap nor available, and the protection might limit discharge to below hotwire needs.

to aquire them you must go through a packmaker dealer type of dealer, as most dealers dont handle them, and they would probably have to ship "special" if you get more than one, due to the lithium content and legal shipment methods. and you gotta follow the specs to charge them

While researching a D Li-Ion buy, the Saft rep told me that the max discharge is something like 1 or 2 amps.

As taken from here, the Saft VL 34570 cells can do an 11A or 2C continuous discharge. I know Saft has some cells in the 15Ah range (D sized) that have a max draw of a couple hundred mA.

yes they have so MANY its confusing, and dont confuse a lithium with a li-ion rechargable, they do have lithium Primaries (one shot) that could potentially be used in some lightweight LED thing, or in a slow strobe beacon or something, but for most of our uses we would want the rechargable thing, not the one time lithiums.

The cells themselves are capable of it, but their protection circuitry isn't. They won't sell the cells w/o the protection. Plus they're about $50 each.

that splains why nobody knows about them, the cheap (china) ones were not as reliable at all vrses these things, but i only have a few of each, and less of the cheap ones, beings some of them were complete junk. Saft has to deal with military spec aparentally, and you know how that is, $600 toilet seat that could go to mars and still work the next day

protection costs some $2.

they asked what are the best, that question is just like what are the best 18650s, the ones you have to assemble the protection yourself and that cost 2x the stuff from china.

same question :-( best or cheapest, or most available ? luckily all of them are getting better in all areas.
