Im working a security gig this summer at an outdoor even. Unfortunately part of the patrol area is a large field that lots of people use to sneak into the event at night. I was out there today surveying the area, I will need a thrower that is good to about 500 yards, 800yards would be prefered if possible. Unfortunately I dont have the funds to spend on a HID light.

Im not up to par on led's so Im asking you. What would be the most useful configuration for the Dereelight DBS V3? Im planning on using CR123's since I wont have to wait for them to charge. Ill have plenty of other lights for closer work. Im not to worried about spill just pure throw.
Thanks.

A DBS is a good thrower, but it won't get out that far.

A Stanley HID for $70 would be a lot better, but I don't know how far it would reach. I haven't tested mine at long range.

For the DBS on CR123 primaries I would recommend either the 1SM or 3SM XP-G R5 with a SMO reflector. These should do a nice job at throwing as well as lighting up a large portion of the field. The 1SM is high output only while the 3SM will have low, medium, and high to cycle through by pressing the tailcap. If you want the most runtime per night, the 1SM can take up to 4 cr123's with the optional extension tube.

There are other options too but they require rechargeable batteries.

And like greg g mentioned, the stanley HID would be an option too. Its much larger than the DBS but its rechargeable and I'm 99% certain will light up a lot more than the DBS

i've got 3 Dereelights and the Stanley HID and i don't really think any of them will accomplish what you want. for one thing, 800 yards is pretty ambitious, even 500 is a lot. i don't really know how big this venue is but requesting 800yds makes it seem pretty substantial. walking into that situation, w/ what i know, i would take my DBS equipped w/ the MC-E and OP everytime. the XR-E or XP-G w/ SMO will both give you more throw but little in terms of useful spill. you definitely don't want the Stanley, it only has 20 minutes runtime and is powered w/ an SLA so its fairly heavy. from what i've bought and used it sounds like Thrunite's Catapult would do a much better job, so long as you don't mind carrying a light that weighs approx the same as a Maglight w/ plus 3 C (or 3 D) batteries. it throws about as far as the DBS w/ a XR-E and SMO but has a lot more useful spill to go w/ it. you might also try a DBS but replace the MC-E emitter w/ an SST-50, apparently Nailbender makes some great ones and i know i'll definitely be getting one soon. beyond these options you'd probably be better off w/ a 10-25 watt HID, especially if want any hope of putting enought light out to 800yds to be useful...but they're costly.

You could go with a DBS packed with an MC-E pill and 4 primary CR123's (Flashcrazy, is this safe?) for short range and a DEFT. Those suckers will out throw ANY other LED out there and both of mine weigh MUCH MUCH less than my Stanley. The DEFT is still no pocket carry light, but it might fit in some jacket or coat pockets or just get a chalk bag like I did. The runtime on the DBS with MC-E is about 1:20 on two of my 18650's, I'm not sure what it is on 4 CR123 primaries (don't use two, I know that's no safe), and the runtime on the DEFT is over an hour regulated (can't find it now, but I seem to remember reading 2 hours?!?!?!) and is one setting, max so no problem for your usage.
I don't envy your task in choosing but I certainly envy your job, it should be fun to catch those freeloaders! Good luck.

Deree's MC-E pill is not compatible w/ any primary cell layout. the MC-E will overdraw primaries and has a max input of 10 volts, 4 primaries would fry the pill.

No LED thrower is going to give you useful light out to 500+ yards. I have a DBS V3 and it throws very well, but definitely not that far. I have a 100 watt halogen spotlight with an 8" reflector that barely gets out that far, except for reflective objects. The only LED light that might possibly do that would be the DEFT but I have never personally used one to know it's useful range. Somebody might chime in that has a DEFT. I am not sure what your budget is but BatteryJunction has 3 HID lights to consider, all under $200 new.

The very popular N30, which is the size of a 6 volt flashlight(floating lantern). http://www.batteryjunction.com/n30-3161.html

The Mega Illuminator with a huge 9" reflector designed for serious throw.

The Illuminator which is between these 2 extremes in size.

Thanks for the replies.
I got some good news today, we will be allowed to use quads to partol the area so I wont need a thrower good to 500 yard so I should be able to get away with a DBS.
Im hoping to get one of the CPFmarket place since neither Solarforce or flashlightconnection.com will ship to a PO box.
Thanks again for all the help.

A good pair of binoculars with an XR-E aspheric mounted and co-witnessed would be handy.

Did you try sbflashlights.com?

You can try giving Jake25 a PM to see if he can work something out with you as well. Pretty easy guy to work with.

I just ordered a Solarforce Masterpiece Pro 1 from Jake.

According to some lux measurements(50,000+) on CPF, the Solarforce Pro 1 you ordered has more throw than any of the other LED throwers with a reflector. It is the biggest, too, of course.

Only one choice for the purpose you've described IMO, Eagletac M2XC4. It will work on 4 CR123a and has a huge spill and throws on par with everything except the Deft.
