Best Quality/Machining Light

I´m looking to purchase a EDC flashlight for my dad as a gift, he is an engineer and CEO, his company do very high quality tools, so he appreciates things that have a good finish. In the other side I am a lumens fanatic (currently I own SC600) so I would like for the light to be powerful in the 200-300 lumes range. Battery wise I think it would be easier for him if its AA or maybe a cr123. So far I like the Sunwayman V10R what do you guys think? Im new to high end flashlights but I have always carried cheap lights my entire life.

If he is a machining fanatic, most of McGizmo's lights are close to perfect. Try one of those.

Yeah, I second a McGizmos, but that's probably way out of your budget range ($500+). Those lights (especially the Piston Drive ones) would greatly appeal to any engineer (including me!). The design (both outside and electrical) is ingenious, clean, simple, and effective.

Sunwayman (SWM) lights aren't really considered "high-end" but they definitely can compete with the best. You can pick up a V10R for $50 or the V10R Titanium for around $120. Excellent choices due to the infinite variability in brightness and very great performance/price ratio.

Look into a Peak Logan in Brass. I can't think of anyone who couldn't appreciate the smoothness and feel of that!

Wow the McGizmos definitely look awesome but if its a $500+ light I dont think I can afford it as a gift, do you guys have any other recommendations that are not as expensive as McGizmos? I know for sure when he sees the McGizmos he is going to want one :)

I second a peak logan in brass, QTC model. Grab a SS clip from oveready. That would be a great dress shirt pocket light.

Mac's machining is sensational. Only rechargeable batteries though for the lights he has available thru his website.

Mac's Customs are also probably out of your budget reach as well. Besides SWM, you can look into Jetbeams (RRT-0) or even their Titanium version (TCR-2). But I prefer SWM since Jetbeam has had issues regarding the current XML diodes and drivers in their control ring implementation (flickering, overdrive, etc).

Malkoff Valiant in 2 x CR123, 1 x CR123 or 2 x AA. Gene's lights are superb, simple and one of the toughest lights on the planet. And relatively affordable for the quality of the product - $55 for the body, up to $69 for the light engine, worth every cent.

If you do not consider it too big, the MD2 with high/low ring is a nice light. They're on sale atm for $119. They take 2 x CR123 and are 260 lumens on high (2 hours on fresh cells), about 20ish on low and are built like tanks.

I'm ordering one with an M61L (175 lumens) for the extra runtime (about 5 hours) with not that much of a drop is usable output.
