Best Throw with AA's

I have searched alot of the threads and I am seriously looking at the Fenix TK41 for a massive throw light powered by AA's. Before I commit, are there other/better options?

I want to stick with AA's because I have 6 matched sets of (4) Rayovac Hybrids that do really well in my Fenix LD20 and 5.11 ATAC A2 as well as camera flashes etc. I use the Maha 9000 charger/analyzer to keep them fresh.

I'm pretty new here

and I am just learning the jargon, but have been a flashlight nut forever. Now with the CREE LED's I am completely hooked.

I appreciate any and all help I can get!!

I think the TK41 is the brightest AA light you can get the only other thing I can think of would be an Asphyric

I think you would be happy with the TK41, it is a beautifully made light. There could be a couple other AA lights out there with higher numbers but not meaningfully higher.

There is the Lumintop PK30 too. Selfbuilt did a great review (as always) and it seems it is in the same league as the Catapult V3 and some 2x18650 lights.

I checked out the specs of the TK41. Wow. If you're looking at something not so extreme but really nice, this year (2012, it's already on their website link removed the Mag Mini Pro and Mag Mini Pro+ are coming out. 200+ lumens, 2AA's, probably will run you about $40. Sounds like my 2012 Christmas present to me! (I don't have a 200 lumen light yet...:)

And it probably does candle mode... perfect for camping and use on the kitchen table when the power goes out

Thanks so much for the suggestions!!!! Looks like I'll have some more research to do, but that is what I wanted. Informed research is far easier than trying to wade through 500 different flashlights! I will compare the Fenix TK41 with the Lumintop PK30

The Heliotek HTE-1 is getting kind of long in the tooth but it is a bombproof AA thrower that deserves an honorable mention:

This light has the deepest reflector I have ever seen. I used to have a pic of a cutaway HTE-1 reflector -- it was amazing.

Thanks Paul, I looked at the LED Lenser X14 and I think that the TK41 with 800 (reported) lumens compared to the 450 of the X14 would sway me to the Fenix. Also I'm not too sure about the dual head of the X14....

D/L is Dereelight. The Dereelight Javelin is one of CPF's favorite 2xAA throwers; how far it throws will depend on which emitter is used (XP-E, XR-E, or XP-G).

Either the XR-E or XP-E will give good throw the XP-G will throw ok but I think there are better XP-G AA throwers but the Javelin is one of the best on the first two LED's. Or the Quark AA Turbo but these are only suggestions if the TK41 is to large.

Dereelight also offer an extender/adapter for their Javelin which then runs on 3 x AA batteries and takes either of the DBS heads - Large deep SMO reflector head (conventional beam with a small, tight hotspot), or the Aspheric (pure throw only) head. Choose an XR-E p900 or P1000 p60 drop-in that will run on 3 x AA NiMh and you will have very good throw running on AA batteries. It's somwhat "lego" (assembling different bits) but it goes together easy and it works well (I got the final bits today and tried it out just now).

That translates to 600 meters of maximum usable throw.

Of course, the light is useless at close range, but if you need something really illuminated within 100-500 meter range with AA light, you can't beat the DBS-Aspheric/Extended Javelin/XR-E EZ900 lego.

No, but DBS will be shorter than DBS/Javelin Frankenstein.
