Hi everyone. This is the first time posting on this forum, although I have looked through other posts in the past.

Anyways, I am wanting to purchase a spotlight that will allow me to see people/my car while I am hiking up a mountain. I will be a very, very long distance away and it will be pitch black outside.

Basically, I want something that will illuminate objects from as far away as I would be able to see if it were day time. What are some spotlights that come closest to accomplishing this, while holding a price tag under $200?

Weight would need to be under 20lbs., run time needs to be no shorter than 20 minutes, and it needs to be rechargeable, and as mentioned it needs to be under $200 (the lower the price, the better).

Well, how far is far away? You can see the top of a mountain miles away, but a light that can shine that far usually cost thousands. Another option could be buying a large spotlight and swapping the bulb with a HID kit meant for cars. Lots of output, lots of throw, and could be had for under $100. Maybe even swap the SLA battery with a Li-ion or Li-poly one for decreased weight.

Roadkill's suggestions are nice too for LED lights.

What kind of batteries do you prefer? Would you like the light to be as light weight as possible? What about lower modes? Also 20 lb seems like a lot to be hiking around with for a single light.

If you can find this at its original price under 200 dollars, this will be the best in this price range.

This light is almost in the SR9x range of lights. Big Boy Light indeed.
 
Kunfine 12V/55W HID. Available from AliExpress. Absolutely blows the TN31 away. Only 50 bucks plus shipping but it's a HID with all the drawbacks associated with a HID.

The best throwing led light for under 200$ might be the modified Fandyfire STL-V6 from saablusters new shop. It supposedly does 117,000lux. It only costs 98$. It hasn't been tested yet though since it is still rather new. He is known for doing excellent work though (he is the maker of the deft).

Oh yeah, i forgot about this one!

But i'll wait for the reviews before i put my money on that light. :)
 
I have a T40CS that I love. Great little light. It may not be the brightest or farthest throwing, but it will light up everything that I could possibly look at with the naked eye anyway (over a quarter mile). It's the law of diminishing marginal utility. It is only so useful, and eventually there is no real benefit at all in the added throw. Most argue that 400m is about the limit for that, but I guess some S&R guys will argue otherwise. ;)

I bought mine for $185.00 shipped.

It is a very good thrower with long runtimes, plus it is a production light.
 
Thanks for the input everyone!

But everyone is advising me to purchase what looks like a regular handheld flashlight sized light. Wouldn't a larger spotlight style be a better option, or am I missing something?
 
A spotlight would give more throw, but regular lights are easier to hike with.

If you don't mind modifying something, get a large incan spotlight and swap the bulb with a HID bulb and ballast. Probably the best bang for your buck and will most likely out throw all the lights mentioned above.
 
You don't say how FAR you'd be from your car to shine a light back at it from up this mountain.

How about you rig your cell phone or a radio, etc...to turn on a light AT THE CAR to light up the car's area by remote control or proximity sensor?

Most lights in your budget would be limited to ~ 1/4 - 1/2 mile range, and that light would be about moonlight level by the time it reach a car at that range, etc.

How far WOULD you need to shine back and look?

PS - an HID spot light WOULD be a good choice if you are within the above range I mentioned...but be heavier than a flashlight. Some compact flashlight form factor HIDs are out now, but, again, your range issue needs to be resolved to know if ANY of them would work. The run time issue is of course an issue for HID's, as they need time to warm up...so it could take a minute or two to warm the HID up enough to see that far with...so every time you look, you waste run time waiting for it to warm up first, etc.
