Better for high current - CR123 or RCR123?

Now in the Thrunite Scorpion V2 review by Selfbuilt, It seems Thrunite boosts the power of the light to 3A with 2XCR123 but forbids RCR123. Selfbuilt explains it here:

Different chemistry again. Primaries can handle quite a bit in some regards, but also have their own limitations (i.e. they can get quite hot internally). But real capacity is higher than protected RCR, so discharge rate is lower. Still, I wouldn't recommend running primaries on Max for extended periods either (mainly for heat) - 18650 would be the best way to go.

Rechargeable Li-ion chemistry has different needs, and care has to be taken in how you treat them if you expect them to retain a charge (and retaining charging ability). I wouldn't be surprised to see >4C discharge rates on standard protected RCR here (and no, I'm not going to test it - I go through enough cells as it is, without that abuse :rolleyes:).

The lights seem to have contrasting warnings. The RCR issue is pretty much explained in the same way by both. Using them will degrade them quickly thus making them more unstable and possibly posing a hazard over time. I guess the real question is, are primary CR123 safe for powering an XML emitter at 2.5A and above? Or is this just a matter of opinion and debate?
 
Not a big deal. Older chemistries are not well suited for high amperage from a small package:

CR123A (lithium primary) - not good for high amperage
RCR123A (protected LiCo) - not good for high amperage
IMR16340 - good for high amperage
