wow, did i buy alot of flashlights! i spent $330 on maglites for friends and family. dad needed four for his snow plow business, and i got a total of 23 packages including a few aa leds. well, a quarter of them are gone, but i know alot of friends wanna take advantage of the deal, and the way i pitch it they cant refuse, basicly for $20 which is what they spend on regular maglite they can have the magled upgrade for free. then i show em this link to seal the deal ;)
http://www.flashlightreviews.com/reviews/maglite_mag-led.htm
plus i throw in d batteries so its still a non profit hookup for friends.

but my question to you guys is, what should i do with some of these?
i really do have alot of friends and many have wanted a hook up and i've said wait till black friday.
but i dont want all of them to be stock magleds.
i just got a great idea to mod some with a sscp4 bulb, which i do not know how to do,
but what else besides a terralux drop in, do you guys recomend.
remember these are only 2d and 3d.
i would have loved to have some 4ds for single and tri led builds, but can i still do something custom.
i need some pointers of where to go from here.
thanks guys,

too wordy?
redo...

i just bought a ton of 2d and 3d magleds from lowes for black friday.
what should i do with them?

not really a political or military minded guy.
i was thinking more along the lines of swapping out the bulb for a sscp4, or what else can i do with a 2d or 3d mag if i take out the magled bulb?

Here's how I did to purchase the Mags:

- Got $100 gift card + FREE $20 gift card + $10 off $50 coupon.
- Used $10 coupon to buy three Minis and two 3D Mags. Another $10 coupon to use.
- Use that $10 coupon to repeat the purchase as above. Again $10 coupon to use.
- Did it one more time. Still have $10 coupon for future purchase.

So if not counting tax and changes, I paid $100 for nine Mini Mags and six 3D Mags: not bad.

awesome. but what do we do with them?
where should i buy my ssc p4 from.
which bin should i look for, are there any v bins available and if so, i want a nice warm light or pure white.
also, has anyone done a tutorial for swapping magleds for ssc bulbs?

Jason, I think you would get more responses to this question if were posted over on the Homemade and Modified lights forum:
http://candlepowerforums.com/vb/forumdisplay.php?f=17

I think the main problem with trying to do a direct swap of an SSC P4 (or similar LED) with the Mag LED is the lack of proper heatsinking, so most folks start by buying a heatsink, then possibly a driver, then some thermal paste or glue and a suitable LED, and then putting it all together.

Here is something to get you started thinking:

And I found this thread interesting:

And of course a nice shop that carries most of what you'll need:

Hope that helps.

Great deals on the lights Jason but I do hope you reconsider being "military minded" this season and thank our service men and women in harms way that keep our country great by allowing us to enjoy the consumerism of sales and the use our torches in freedom. One of thoses lights to a soldier would be a nice gesture.

Jason,

I modded my 3C Mag with one of these HAIII heatsinks:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=160483

This SSC LED:

and more or less following the instructions in this tutorial:

http://www.candlepowerforums.com/vb/showthread.php?t=144921

It was relatively easy to do and It's very bright. The tint is a little ugly and the beam is not so hot, but it's worlds better than the original Mag. I've been trying to get some of these drivers to do another mod and update the first one:

These wouldn't work for the 2 cell lights since the minimum voltage is 3.6.

Have fun!

jason, as there seems to be a possibility that you may want to mod one or more of these, I'll move the thread to H&M for you, as Derek Dean suggests. You may pick up some more good suggestions there.

If you decide otherwise, let me know and I'll move it back.

The easy methods - just put in a better bulb and some decent NiMH cells - will blow most of your friends away at modest cost.

By modest, I mean maybe $ 5 - 10 for each QUALITY NiMH cell, and perhaps 10 into a new bulb. Easily double run time and brightness with no tricky modifications.

For an LED conversion - I will recommend the Lumileds LED path, as I know that one better. Frankly, a drop in LED package is at best mediocre IMHO.

For 3 D - same batteries
- Install direct driven Lux III or K2 (white) on a heat sink. Simple, easy, bright, reasonable price, and the end users will be able to understand it.

For 2 D
- Same formula, but instead of white, use a Red / Orange Lux III (will run at the lower voltage with no driver)
- Trust me, snow plow people will like it.

See Photon Fanatic's web site for LEDs.

Search for a former modder third_shift for mods to a mag.

As much as I like LED lights, given the very short time frame until Xmas, the incan bulb upgrade is one of the few I would consider for so many lights.
