What are the brightest and cheapest 5mm and SMD LEDs. They are going to be used in a book light running off 4.5V
My company is designing the light so I wanted to point them in the right direction /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif So the price has to be right too.

They are currently running (3) 5mm's in parallel off 4.5volts with a 40 ohm resistor /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Thanks

I suggest that you either stay with the 5mm's or look into the Spiders; SMD parts do not have the height to have a good lens to focus the light

:bump:
I'm thinkin about another use for bright white SMDs like for my car's vanity mirrors. Any known cheap/good sources I can get these? Are there heatsinking issues with these?

Several companies make them, I suggest KingBright - they are very nice, love to give out samples

Standard SMD LEDs are low current, no heatsinking

Ok, I found these bright white SMD LEDs rated 120 degree viewing angle, 3-4.2VDC and dimensions: .14"x.11"x.08"H. But the distributor has no information regarding mcd rating nor how much current to drive them with. Any recommendations/suggestions if no specs are available?

Really? Someones gotta know how much current to drive them with? I'm guessing right now 50mA @ 4.2V?

(How come this thread was moved from the LED forum?)
