OK. I was pretty happy with my light selections for a while but after seeing that a rechargeable version of the Maxfire - which is in turn very similar performance-wise to the excellent value Legend LX - I had to have one. After looking at four Walmarts to see if any had the Rechargeable Maxfire in stock, I ordered it from microcenter.com at 2:30 and it arrived on Saturday (SATURDAY!) before 11:00am via FedEx. I didn't pay for extra shipping. By the way, for Indianapolis area residents, the Walmart at 86th and Michigan Rd has the 2L Maxfire. The other three stores I checked all had Legend LXs, but no Maxfires at all. I did pick up a gunmetal gray 4D MagL for $16 though.

First impression is that it is quite a bit longer than the Legend LX or Surefire G2. Focus is very good... about 95% as good as my focusable LX but as I shine it on a white wall at a distance of less than 1 foot, the bulb projection is offset to one side. My Legend has no such offset. A closer look reveals that the bulb is not centered quite perfectly but shining on the wall at about 2 feet, this is not detectable at all.

Also, comparing it to the Legend LX, the LX is slightly whiter and the hotspot is slightly larger at pretty much any distance.

I played with it for a while, inside and out. Very good throw for the price... I think maybe slightly better throw than the LX though I believe that in an enclosed room, the LX has slightly more overall output. In general use, it is the equal of the LX but in a larger and rechargeable package. Any non-candlepowerforum member would likely be impressed by the light overall.

Also, as an aside, I had probably used the light off and on for about two hours prior to today. Hadn't run it down very far, as I was recharging in between uses just to keep it at the ready. This is not something I will continue to do in the future as it is a dumb charger and you can over charge it if you don't time yourself. The manual recommends charging the battery over 8 hours, but not more than 12 hours.

Anyway, today I wanted to see how long it would run with continuous use. I started with a completely fresh charged battery in the Maxfire Rechargeable and two brand new Surefire 123As in the LX. I turned on the Maxfire and started my stopwatch. Test setup was being in an enclosed bathroom with the Maxfire constantly on. Every two minutes, I'd turn on the LX and check the difference between them. What follows are my notes.

2 Minutes: very similar, lens/bezel cool

4 Minutes: very similar, lens/bezel warmer

6 Minutes: LX is brighter than Maxfire when shined at the same time, but can't tell a difference going from one to the other. Lens/bezel pretty warm.

8 Minutes: Same as after 6 min but lens too hot to constantly touch with skin.

10 Minutes: Slightly more pronounced difference than at 6/8 minutes

12 Minutes: Hotspot on Maxfire starting to shrink, but still quite white.

14 Minutes: Hotspot smaller still, starting to yellow. Bezel cooler.

16 Minutes: Still roughly comparable lights, but any flashaholic would point out the difference in total output and throw.

18 Minutes: Larger difference now. Bezel only slightly warm, lens can be touched for multiple seconds with very little pain.

20 Minutes: Hotspot twice as large on LX as Maxfire. Still, impressive light. Someone who only owned a 2D MagL would still be impressed with the Maxfire

21 Minutes: visibly dulling. Much less output now. I'd be disappointed if this is what the light looked like with a fresh charge.

22 Minutes: LX blows the Maxfire away.

23 Minutes: Maxfire looks like a very well focused MiniMag with large hotspot.

24 Minutes: Pitiful little light... still good enough to navigate with in a completely enclosed bathroom. Can easily read by it. This is when I would say the light is basically unusable.

25 Minutes: I just looked straight into the light and didn't really hurt my ability to look outside.

26 Minutes: Still barely on. Only one person could read by the light at this point.

27 Minutes: About the same as 26 minutes

28 Minutes: Still about the same.

29 Minutes: A little bit duller.

30 Minutes: Barely on. Big difference. Looks as if you completely ran the batteries down on a MiniMagL then left the light turned off for a few hours, then rechecked.

31 Minutes: At this point, looking directly into the light, the reflector is brighter than the bulb itself.

32 Minutes: Barely, barely on. Can only read about three words at a time in a book.

33 Minutes: Equally effective as a laser pointer at reading a book in darkness.

34 Minutes: All but totally unusable.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable

Also, sorry no pics of the lights or beamshot comparisons. My digital camera is not currently available to me. I'll update in a week or so when I can get my camera back.

Also, another member wanted to know if my Maxfire Rechargable seems to lose its charge if sitting unused for a period of time. After the battery is charged, I will try my best to not use it for 5 to 7 days and report back.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable

After last night I must echo that the rechargable Maxfire has a LOUSY runtime, and terrible self discharge.

I hadn't used my light in a while, and picked it up. I shined it at my white ceiling, and within a few seconds it visibly dimmed.

If it was blindingly bright for 20 minutes (think P61 or P91) it would be something else. But what it gives out is 1 hour P60 class light for some 25 miutes IF you use it freshly charged. Wait a few days and ALL BETS are OFF!

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Thanks cratz excellent work. I heard about the maxfire on this forum and I was interested. I bought the nonrechargeable version last week at a local walmart. They didn't have the rechargeable one. On the way home I was thinking I should have waited for the rechargeable one.

After reading your post I guess the light would only be useful as some kind of a work light to check something a few minutes here and there & then put it back on the charger. I thought some one else mentioned about 40 minutes of good light. With 40 minutes being at about the results of your 18 minute mark. Do you still consider the light worthwhile?

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

The fact that if you let it sit very long, it's dead or nearly so... coupled to the fact that the battery has to come out and go into a STUPID charger...

To me equals a less than stellar value.

I like the 2L Maxfire quite a lot. But I would probably sell this rechargeable Maxfire pretty cheap.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Well, I think I'll hold on to mine, but I think that the $50 more for a Strion might make a LOT of sense.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Well, I started a self discharge test last night. I charged the light for 12 hours after completely depleating it. It was done being charged just before 10pm Wednesday night. Compared beams with the Legend LX twice for about five seconds each time. Once for a 'whiteness test' at 30 inches and once for a very informal 'indoors throw test' at 18 feet. As I said, they were similar but with the Maxfire offering perhaps a tad more throw.

Tonight, after about 24.5 hours of being off the charger, kind of odd results... Shining on a white wall at a distance of about 30 inches, the lights appear very similar but when shined at about 18 feet, the Maxfire is noticably dimmer than the LX. This is after only 24 hours.

NOT a good sign.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

26 hours later (40 hours out of the charger) and about 15 seconds total use, the light is still impressive but definately not quite as bright as the LX.

The more I think about it, the less I like this light.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Hrmm... Just looked at them both about 15 minutes ago (72 hours out of the charger)... It's definately not quite as bright now... Still very, very usable, but compared it to the LX for about a minute tonight so the rest of the results may be slightly skewed maybe 5%, but the light is impressing me less and less. What is it about the battery pack that would allow it to self-discharge this quickly? Is there ANY chance it would keep it's charge longer if it wasn't in the body? I can't imagine it would, but thought I'd throw it out there for our more experienced and knowledgable members.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Well, I missed a couple days of reporting, but I just checked it a few minutes ago but it's been out of the charger for 7 days now and I would still call it very usable. If there's any difference from the test four days a go.

Overall, I guess I'm not too disappointed with the self discharge at this time. But overall, I would rather just pay $1 a piece for 123 batteries and get solid, honest hour of runtime. The only things I prefer about the Maxfire over the Legend is the smaller head diameter of the Maxfire and the Maxfire clickie button is quite a bit easier to press than on the Legend.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

OK. As of tonight, I've probably used the light a total of two minutes and it's been out of the charger for 13 days. Still puts out very usable light. I'd guess it is comparable to 6 or 8 minutes use on a fresh charge.

Looking at the rechargable battery pack, it is comprised of 4 x 2/3A batteries rated for only 650 mAh. It is also a Ni-Cd pack rather than NiMH. I'm going to follow another members action and order a couple of 1100 or 1150 mAh NiMH packs. He is reporting 40-45 minutes of use before 'visibly dimming'. That sounds pretty good to me. The packs cost $8.50 - $13.00 and is worth it even just as a spare. I'm going to order two and play with them for a period of time and report back with another run test.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Well, I charged up the stock 650 mAh battery pack and did a runtime test with a Surefire P61 lamp. I don't have a second P61 to do a side by side comparison, so the 'results' are purely my highly calibrated eyes and fingers. Here are my findings:

Initial: Pretty frickin bright!

1 Minute: Not much difference.

2 Minutes: Already noticably dimmer. I can glance at the very tip of the P61 without seeing stars afterwards.

3 Minutes: Noticably dimmer again. From an angle, I can look at the wiring behind the filament.

4 Minutes: Yellower. I can look right at the filament now and still read these notes immediately following.

5 Minutes: Not going to last much longer but still usable light.

At about 5:35, the bulb started dimming at an alarming rate and I shut the light off. Five and a half minutes... That's pretty sad. Can't wait to get those 1100 mAh Gold Peak battery packs.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

I like the Maxfires. I have a 2L powered and the rechargeable.

I've noticed the self-discharge issue, also. Maybe it's the cell size used in the stick, as the stick used in my Surefire 6R also has terrible self-discharge issues, and they use the same size cell.

I put together a 1100MAH NiMH pack for the Max. (and probably 6R). I charge it in a cradle, hooked upto an Integy battery charger/conditioner.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Were either one of you able to get 35 - 40 minutes of runtime.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

My 1100 mAh packs haven't arrived from cheapbatterypacks.com yet. I'll definately to testing when they get here.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

I've done several raw runtime studies with 1100 MaH NiMH sticks and found that Initially I got about 45 minutes of bright light. After about 10 charge/discharge cycles I am seeing almost 50 minutes before dimming.

I've swapped out the stock bulb and I'm now running a P61, and getting about 23-24 minutes on the same sticks.

I plan on doing some actual run time/voltage plots soon, but I've got too many irons in the fire.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

bwaits,

Are the 1100 MaH NiMH sticks made of 2/3A batteries. Do you know if 4 of them will work or is it better to buy the stick.

Right now I have the non-rechargeable version. And to experiment I bought 4 1/5A (sanyo), NICD (flat tops), 1.2 volt, 235 mah. At the place I bought them I had caps put on two of them and a tab on other two. But it only works about 7-8 minutes.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Are you asking if 4 individually charged 2/3A cells would work in this light? Sure... as long as contacts are being made. I think the cells are wrapped for convinience of not losing them while taking them in and out and ease of keeping them lined up on the charger. Some places don't charge to pack them into a stick.

And as a reference, the OEM stick with the rechargeable Maxfire has 4 650 mAh cells while your experiment has 4 235 mAh cells. Both NiCd.

And yes, the sticks bwaits and I have ordered are made of 1100 mAh 2/3A cells. Gold Peaks in my case and I think in bwaits case as well.

Re: Brinkmann Maxfire Rechargable Re Cratz

Thanks for your reply,

The setup I have was used in the non-rechargeable. Which also works in the legend LX and I guess in other 123 lights but w/ dismal runtime. I was interested because it looks like you got a poor mans version of the surefire 8NX.

Thanks,

Steven
