Well, I did it! I BROKE my SandY 490. The first time, my son broke the crown off the watch. Sent it to a jeweler, and he repaired the stemp - it wasn't quite right, but it worked. Last night, I went to wind the watch, and it snapped the stem, right below the repair (Looks like the repair caused a stress point)

Anyway, I really liked this watch - nice, basic, and ACCURATE - about 3 seconds/month!!!

Now here is the question - I'm on a REALLY tight budget, but need a new watch - the question is, what to buy. Most of the Luminox watches are too gaudy - If I buy one, I really want to send it to MKII and get the face and band done My choices there would be the "Seal" as the rest are out of the current price range (Got to dig my Wegner Chrono out for the AM)

The other option is to look around for a 590, or another 490. The 590 has the one thing I missed on the 490 - the date.

So anyone know who currently has good prices on any of the above?

Just an idea, but the MWC-G10SL is made, I understand, by the same outfit that made the SandY 590 (and that also makes Traser, H3, and Luminox), MB Microtec.

It looks just like the older Traser S1300.

I DO NOT KNOW for certain this is true, as I haven't examined one in person, but I may be getting one in the future.

The MWC G10 Self Luminous Infantry Watch is equipped with a special tritium light source. These tiny, airtight vials, sealed under high pressure are 100 times brighter than any other current illumination system such as Luminova; bright enough in fact to read a map if the watch is held close enough.
US$139.00

Here's a link: http://www.mwcwatches.com/

The date window on the MWC watch and the Traser 1300 is MUCH larger (and easier to read) than the SandY 590, which is one reason I like the looks of those two.

Here's a pic of a 1300 and my 590 side-by-side. Almost a shame I'm going to ship the 1300 back where it came from.

I'd strongly consider the excellent line of watches from CountyComm ? They have the Maraglo at $49, the Marathon Tritium at $90, and SandY tritium at $125. I owned the $90 Marathon and it's an excellent watch and an excellent value.

Also, if your budget is really tight, consider a Timex Ironman to tide you over. Bulletproof watches that really would be a great value even if they cost double what they do. I love their Indiglo feature. A visit to your friendly neighborhood Wal-Mart will reveal lots of great Timex choices.

They also have a sort of tactical-looking analog that could fit the bill as a cheap beater. Go to
Timex.com and put 18581 in their search box. It's sold at Wal-Mart for all of $17.00

Good luck,

Dave

Feel free to bid on my (formerly DBrier's) SandY 590 with Luminova mod.

I also have a used SandY 590F (590 with American flag) that I have not yet put Luminova on that I was planning to luminize and then auction off too.
