I've got a light with about 3 vf @ 1000ma. I've ran it with a resistor drive, but would like something a little more suited to variable input. It's set up to use 3xaaa or 1x18650 which I like but I'd also like to be able to run it from a ni-mh sub c cell. Four modes would be great as I normally wouldn't use 1000ma unless I was using it as a pistol light, and I do a little biking around town here making the strobe useful.
There are some that use a boost/linear design but I'm not so sure about the efficiency of those especially at 4.5v 1000ma = about 66% efficient at best and I really doubt that they would be able to deliver anything close to 1000ma at 1.2Vin.
Any suggestions? An inverting buck/boost would be fine as they only require one transistor and one inductor. Also, I'm contemplating making my own.
