Hey guys I just got a larger lathe and I need some help on what tools to buy for it

it has a QCTP and I need tooling so post links to some good tools like Facing/threading ect.... Not looking to grind my own

will be working with aluminum and copper and little harder material

A lot of people really like the CCMT insert in conjunction with a SCLCR (or similar) tool. There are boring bars that use the same insert.

I find that having a wide array of tools helps when you are doing different profiles. Form tools make tricky patterns easy.

Don't forget threading tools.

Not the only site, but Carbide Depot is a good place to start--at least you can see the toolholders and the inserts for them.

And check out their Technical Resources section, if you'd like to learn stuff, too.

Curtis at Latheinserts.com carries the TMX branded SCLCR/L holders for good prices

You can also find the TMX ones on ebay from various vendors for about the same price or more with shipping.

Or if you don't want to spend that much, you get them from Shars.

Or if you don't mind spending more, I have the same holders in RH & LH made by Dorian which I got at my local Travers.

Also have SDJCR/L holders by Dorian which I use quite often too.

I use CCGT & DCGT inserts in them.

... need some help on what tools to buy for it ...

Always ready to help a brother spend his money :nana:

1) More common inserts cost less

2) But less is sometimes not more

A lot of people really like the CCMT insert ...
+1

A good choice for a GP (general purpose) insert. Not really good at anything specific but excellent for roughing down or initial profiling. I often grab the CCMT for first op. About 1000 currently shown on eBay.

I use CCGT & DCGT inserts in them.

CCGT=ground (as in sharper edge). CCMT=molded edge, not quite as sharp but generally more durable for roughing, interrupted cuts, marginal setups, etc.

DCGT is another good GP insert. More pointy at 55° where the CCGT is almost square at 80°. Not quite as bull strong as the CC shape but the DC shape will get into places that the CC cannot. The tool I often grab for second op.

Both CC & DC are NEUTRAL RAKE (0°) so you may want to look into some of the specialty work around inserts like the high positive, super sharp (& delicate) aluminum-specific options:

Grabbed my little 1/2" boring bar one day, hands covered in slime, and the skinny bar attached to the fat toolholder started heading toward the concrete floor. Did not want to see the $200 solid carbide bar shatter like glass (& they will) but forgot about the razor edge insert. Took a couple of weeks for that one to heal shut.

Great thanks guys for the tips and links ill be buying some in a few days :)

... what inserts I should buy for it ... To cut aluminum and copper ...

Aluminum specific inserts are designed to cut three metals ... aluminum, aluminum & aluminum.

95% of all available copper alloys machine like your worst nightmare, the exception being Free Machining Copper aka:

c145
c14500
tellurium copper

A 1" x 12" rod on Amazon is $56.83 & it's difficult to find for much less except sometimes on eBay.

To machine aluminum only: http://www.latheinserts.com/CCGT-3251-INSERT-FOR-ALUMINUM-1-03-000329.htm
