Hello, I was just wondering what do you guys think about this laser http://cgi.ebay.com/Powerful-Astronomy-50mw-50-mw-Green-Laser-Pointer-Pen_W0QQitemZ280086167694QQihZ018QQcategoryZ14954QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem

and can this one be modded to like 100 mW or more?

and also which type of goggles should I get for protection from this laser? I heard they have to protect form both IR and green. Which wavelengths are must? and what is OD > 7 ? I heard it is some kind of level of transparency...which number is safe? which is low?

Thank you very much for your time

all lasers can be modded but the "light saber" pictures are a fallacy. no e-bay laser (less than $1000) has a beam that looks like that.... I don't know about getting to 100 mW.

i`l bet that laser dusnt have a ir filter and its 10(if that) mw of green and 40mw of ir....all you have to do is look through this forum and i think you`l find that all the people on here say to stay away for the cheaper end of the pointers and use a reputable seller of wich there are many mentioned !

good luck !

That's a scam IR-filterless laser. You can pot mod a laser, but you're very likely to kill it or severly shorten its life in the process for most lasers. Honestly though, even the best mod would not even get 50mW out of that laser. Most of the "50mW" is invisible, useless IR that helps scam people into thinking they're getting a good deal on a piece of junk. The average eBayer never knows the better though, and leaves positive feedback anyway.

I wouldn't mess with a high end laser. You can probably mod it but it will void the warranty and may shorten its life.

Yes, any laser could practically. Would it be a good idea to do it? NO!

Modding any laser increases the chance it either fails on the spot, or has its life drastically shortened. With a 60mW, you might be able to push a few more mW out of it, but even doing that bring a high risk of losing the laser forever. NEVER MOD A LASER YOU AREN'T 100% PREPARED TO LOSE! At least leadlights are cheap and can normally take a bit more power. These IIIB greenies though... You're talking of a huge risk, for practically no reward. It's your gamble though, good luck.

They are ALL from China or thereabouts. It doesn't say it has an IR filter and it says <80 mW. That can mean 40 -50 ??? mW. Ask them the questions.

Although I don't own one yet, an Envee http://www.lucentoptics.com/envee/ may be a better choice for you. You will know that it is true 80mW (or more) and does have a filter.

For the laser you listed, you're going to spend $160 plus about $60 shipping and handling. The shipping on the e-bay laser is overboard. The whole unit will cost $220 or more... Go with a reputable brand if you're shelling out that kind of dough.

Just thought I'd mention that if you look down on this forum, you'll find a link to Dealextreme's 100mw greenie for $100 (well 112 or such) and it *is* 100mw of true green laserlight! (somone on the forum here measured it WITH an IR filter in place)

Who did that test? Dealextreme themselves mention on their site that there is no IR filter in their lasers...
The prices definitely seem to back up that claim.

Do you know if BLPS with Brown lenses can protect against laser without IR filter?

I want to say it was liveforphysics, but I could be wrong...
