OK, some folks wanted to know how the Carclo SIDE EMITTER optics work along with a reflector.

This was just a "quick and dirty" test to get a basic idea. I didn't try to maximize a hotspot or find the geometry for the most pleasing beam or anything.

I just took a moderately good sized reflector out of the junk box.. Not even sure what it came from. It is 2.22 inches in diameter and really close to 1 inch deep. Had to bore out the base of the reflector to ~.70 inch diameter to fit the functional part of the optic in.

I didn't want to use one of my "pristine" 3 watt stars for this, and the only other thing I had handy was an OLD 1 watt white star. Not even sure of the bin, but I think a P. Maybe a Q. mounted on a little circular heatsink, and using one of the 10071 SE optics

On a Li-Ion battery this rinky dink setup pulled 400ma @ 3.996 V (load) and the hotspot was about 500LUX at 1 meter..... Not bad for a one watter not seriously overdriven..

Beam pattern is ALMOST up to M*g quality though: /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

This setup looks to give a pretty decent throw to at least 100, possibly 150ft. Not really a fair test though, because I was trying to juggle all the components at once and hold the reflector into the right place and orientation without my fingers getting in the way of the beam.

I've never had a regular side emitter Luxeon nor even seen any light in person that uses them, so I am really no judge to compare them to the Carclo SE optic. The optics ARE supposed to be significantly more efficient than the SE led itself... but that is just based on Carclo's own statement. I have no idea if reality matches the marketing info.

But, the best 1 meter LUX reading from one of those early 1 watters shining through a NX-5 optic that I remember measuring was about 350....

So, I'd assume that matching a Luxeon 3 to a reflector with an optimum geometry, you could get a heck of a bright spot and pretty good throw..... The downside is that the optic takes up a heck of a lot more room than a plain SE Luxeon emitter..... So it would be more practical for BIG flashlights, spotlights or maybe some sort of fixed installation than for a pocket light.

But, it is worth experimenting for those that are into that sort of thing.....

I forgot I already had a SYAK Luxeon 3 set up with a 10040 SE optic.

Well, the three watter on the same battery as above put out about 880 peak LUX at 1 meter. Beam pattern was just about identical.

Throw seemed to be a little farther, but I couldn't say for sure without a more serious test, or at least eyeballing them side by side, which would be difficult since I only have one reflector. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif

! So what was the luxIII pulling? If it's 1000ma, then I can say 880 lux isn't anything great for a luxIII. A luxIII in a mag reflector can easily do 9,000 lux or more. I had a cyan luxIII that probably did 15,000 or more easily. It obliterated any beam I put it against.

Now if the luxIII was pulling 400ma, then there's hope possibly... Have you tried placing just the bored out reflector over the bare luxeon and measuring the lux?

A lux/luxIII at 600mA should be about 4000 lux

Isaac; I don't know what it was pulling; The battery (one of AWs protected 14501s) has been recharged since... I just measured it again.. the SYAK on a fresh charge was drawing ~.740ma and putting out ~1400 LUX at 1 meter through the reflector at the hottest spot I could get..

A reflector is nearly useless on a lambertian or batwing Luxeon;
I didn't measure it, but last night when I was putting the one watt/heatsink together I DID try it out with just the reflector... and it maybe increased the focus /hotspot and narrowed the beam by 10-15 % of the LED alone.

Let me reiterate: I don't have any side emitting Luxeons, and the reflector is just something out of a junk box, so this isn't any kind of fair or scientific test. All I know about matching reflectors to photon sources is that even if I cared to study it, the math would be make my head explode.... and I'm not "into" it enough to try to determine things like that by getting a bunch of different reflectors and determining things experimentally... sorry.

You are VASTLY oversimplifying the LUX output situation.
The current is only one factor in the equation and it is far from the most important one. The optics or the reflector geometry is the key to peak LUX output.... (we aren't talking total lumen output which I have no way to measure, but LUX, and that is a whole "nother ballgame".)..

For instance, I have a TXOK right here that I just hooked up to 3 slightly used alkaline C cells (4.25V no load) With no optic or reflector it puts out ~ 43 LUX at 1 meter.@ 1.3A current draw.

Slap on a 20mm - 6 degree optic and it puts out a peak of ~ 2000 LUX at one meter, same current consumption.

And a similar setup electronically (TXOK DD on three C alkalines in a M*g conversion) I get ~ 12,000 LUX at 1 meter.

My old ARC LS one watters put out 220 -348 LUX @ 1 meter depending on which light I measure and what kind of battery it is running on (R123s give me the highest LUX readings on them.) Some of my old mods and scratch built 1watt lights range from a 200 LUX to about 700 LUX @ 1 meter depending on the optics and the power.

I was obviously referring to using a HD emitter with a mag reflector at optimum focus - so a direct comparison to the SE optic you were testing. Basically, it looks like the SE optic is not producing a point source like a real SE emitter would.

I wonder if the reflector your're using is a poor performer.

Is a mag reflector stock opening large enough for the optic to go into the focal point? You might want to test that out...

I have desgined one reflector. But i dont think i will put it up for production yet.If doing test,I will just do it without THE reflector, coz you might lose light with that reflector.
One more remark 1 W LED should have more light out put than this result. (800Lux with a good reflector)

Thanks for showing this.

For some time I've envisioned a three-into-one optic. I don't have the facilities to build it but I've done some experiments (playing) that indicate it can work.

My first thoughts about this were for fiber optic testing. Then I started thinking about how a reflector would react to it.

Three 3 watters in this configuration would concentrate the point source. I think that by incorporating a reflector with this approach may allow LEDs to compete with incans for throw. I had thought a very small dome shaped exit for the photons would work best. I see now that a side emitting exit point might work well too.

So, thanks again for showing this very interesting optic.
