I would like to get a list started here of some good mod hosts.
These can be any size, but I am most interested in 1x123, 2x123, 2AA, 4AA Hosts.

Please provide some infomation, and a link to where the light is avalible.
Thanks.

Garrity Stainless Steel 2AA Std

http://www.garritylites.com/site/retail_details.php?recid=51

You can get them at wally world for about 5 bucks. Awesome potential the battery holder that housed 2AA's can be removed and replaced with 3 CR123's for a total of 9volts comes with a clickie too /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

9volts + 12 volt booter circuit (max682) + 5watt luxeon = Ohh! my eyes!

Any type of mod? Do we omit drop-in kits (can we mention M*g)?

1. The clone 2x123 xenon lights offered on eBay, layout varies from mfr to mfr, but still a good host.
2. 1x123 xenon light offered by Harbor Freight
3. Dorcy 1AA LED
4. Surefire KL3 (not necessarily cheap, but a great LED mod platform)
5. Arc AAA

Good start guys,

wasabe64,

Not looking for mods, or dropiins, just the light host itself that would be good for mods. (your list was good)

What did we think about this one?
I know it was mentioned here before, but I dont recall the results.

These look really nice.
web page

These look great, they are like the black one in the first link.

Then theres the 1x123 version. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Little oddly shaped...

Ok, I'll bite, but how do you order these without going thru ebay and the $8 shipping on a $7 light.

Can you send the link to the mfg direct?

Thanks,
CY

I have no idea. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
I would also like to know, cuz ppl on ebay want crazy shipping prices. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Cy,

Let's see if there's a CPF'er in HK that may be willing to source a few for us... /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Jtice,

I think I have the first light you posted.

What do you have mind?

I've been working in a mod on one of these lights using Shoppe parts (I currently have 4 other mods on the go, so I haven't spent a lot of time or cash on mine yet).

I had a LED/Ecan/Esink combo in mind for mine, Kroll tailswitch with stock reflector. Also thought about fitting a MN-03 in the head for an incandescent mod. The biggest challenge is the reversed battery config (+ve is pointing away from the business end of the light).

I've heard comments from others that these lights are available in HK for $5US each on the street. Still, even at $15US, I think it's a good cheap mod platform (considering all I want is the body). The Dorcy Spyder sells at a comparable price doesn't it?

ah, pos. toward the tail. hmmm
That does add to it, have to make a few changes for that.
Doable though.

I was thinking 1W or 3W with a DB converter from the shoppe.
Dont know about the reflectors, they might be fine.

Would really need that lights in hand, to see whats possible.
Some look pretty cool though. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Golden Gadgets has a banner ad here and carries several of these units. Not always as low as the ebay price but you don't have to deal with the sometimes wacky shipping charges and waiting to win an item. I just got one each of the bottom two pictured above. I call the odd one my "duck pin" light as it kind of resmebles a squat bowling pin.

They sure do, a year ago, they all looked like Walther clones. Today, there is every body design under the sun.

Of course, that variety is works against you if you are contemplating a mod design.

My idea is very similar to yours, I was thinking a LuxIII with DB750. The stock reflector on mine actually looks very usable.

I'll PM you some of the details of mine later after work.

BTW - back to the topic at hand: Cheap Good Mod Host List.

6. The venerable M*g 2C/2D /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Careful jtice, some of those cheapies on e-bay don't have good reflectors. I don't know about the ones you've listed above but some have reflectors that don't have a mirror shine. The ones usually made of metal but they make for acceptable flood reflectors though. Nothing a little optic replacement can't fix. Still they are decent hosts though.

That 1x123 "Police" style light I belive has one of those reflectors I was talking about. Look here. It's a PM6 (screw in LA) copy and some here have had experiences with it already. I believe you've seen it already though.

Here's another one that I was selling that has one of those dull reflectors in it.

The last one you posted about (the one with a big brother) already has a luxeon in it. I don't know anything else about it other than it has a reflector (nicer than those metal ones I mentioned) but uses a LD. Should be a nice fairly easy mod.

Then there's this one. Looks like they copied a McLux PR head, don't it? I haven't seen anymore listed as I really wanted to pick one up. That one sold for a price higer than what I wanted to pay at the time. I believe it also has a LD in it but not sure. I wonder how the quality is on this one. I believe jcciv got it.

Ah great info guys.

Yea, I figure some have crap for reflectors. But as you said, nothing an optic cant fix. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

If any of you have info on some of these, please PM me, or post here.
I cant decide which to go with.

I am wanting to make a few, for outfoor activities, that I can hand to friends, and not really care if they get beatup alittle.
But, at the same time, they look pretty nice.

darkzero,

I really like that one that you were selling, It has a nice small clean design.
I was about to post that I wanted it, but then saw it was already sold. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Might have too large a Diameter head though.

I really like this one. Never seen a real one, though, just photos.

If it can fit a regulator and perhaps even a cut down PM6 reflector, and the price were dropped to something under $20, this would be a winner in my book.

It was cheap, shipping wasn't that high compared to most other ebay sellers, it came from Hong Kong. Funny the seller was here in the States but it shipped from Hong Kong. Had a label saying if undeliverable to foward it to the seller's address in the States. He had a bunch of em' when I bought it but doesn't seem to have anymore now.

I thought it was a decent host. All that was needed was a relector change. The bulb holder was a slug that also unscrewed out of the body from the back and was a perfect heatsink as long as you eliminated the hole that the bulb passed through. The light was very thick. Felt "heavy duty". I guess I shoulda kept it but I never got around to doing the mod on it for some reason. Oh well, time to look for another host.

I like that one too. The only thing that is holding me back from getting it is I wan't to find out if the head unscrews. Most of these lights have lenses that are pressed in so you must press them out from the backside along with the reflector. I want to stick glass lenses in everything I have. Haha, I guess I'm spolied and have grown to dislike polycarbonate since they scratch. I know they do have their advantages though.

ah Dark, that one you sold was clickie?
geeez /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ohgeez.gif
That would have made a great host.
I like the prices on ebay, but, I am NOT paying those crazy shipping charges.
