Target's had the Lenser series (badged as Eddie Bauer) for awhile now, and there's always been the "toy" LED section of the store with the Neo-Glo keychain lights and the chubby little flashlights with pink ponies on 'em, and the multicolor rave lights for the older kids, but today was different. No Luxeons yet, no breakthroughs, but a mini-explosion of interesting little... things:

Rayovac "Reading Light Solutions", 2-LED/3AAA reading lights-- two styles! First, the Pillow Light:

then, the lavalier-style Light Bar:

http://www.rayovac.com/flashlight/reading/reading_lightbar.htm

The photo doesn't properly show that the figure-8 reflector surrounding the LEDs is shiny. The Bar was around $10, the Pillow about $13. That "pillow" light reminds me of the old beanbag-style ashtrays with sand or BBs in the bottom.

Then, the Vector 5-LED (plus 3 red LEDs) flashlight, model VEC114 (sorry, can't find a picture on the web) whose face is strongly reminiscent of the Cateye HL-EL300's:

http://www.cateye.com/products/lights/battery_headlights/HL_EL300.html

In fact, imagine the Cateye mating with a Nuwai FX-880 and you'll have an idea of the squared-off shape of the thing. Runs on 4AA cells. Very bluish light, about the same brightness as the Brinkmann 4-LED/2D but less focused. About $12. Not a bad light, though on close inspection it's clear that each of the 5 lens assemblies, individually fitted to its LED and screwed to the PCB with 2 tiny screwlets, has come from a huge bin where jostling has scored and scoured them badly enough to cause the "less focused" look I mentioned. A little jeweler's rouge (or plastic polish) seems called for. [I did this and it does help-- you can see the LEDs' leads projected on the wall] The red LEDs are in the tail, behind a diffusing panel. They flash, but unbrightly.

What would you do with two little Photon-sized lights with the ability to clip to your eyeglass frame or anything else? Take a look at the Panther Vision AC-10 shown here:

http://www.perfectionoptics.com/prd_anywhereclipon2.html

On sale for about $18. Could be handy.

Of course, Target's always been the place to get a nifty metal-body combo 3mm white LED / red laser for $6. Endless fun watching cats chase the laser, plus a dim but usable LED flashlight. Don't get in the habit of aiming it at your face.

Finally, the Dorcy Trio. Yes, our west Michigan Target has all three of the small Dorcy LED flashlights, the 1AAA, the 1AA and the 2C. They're $8, $10 and something like $28 (!)respectively. I noted that the 1AAA was the old (ribbed) style (see the "Dorcy changed something" thread). Not the best deal, but another source for these interesting, overachieving lights.

Get out there and shop! Make us all proud.

Are all of these LED lights in the same section of the Target store?

Yep. All within a few feet of one another. This is in wild wooly west Michigan, though. In the more civilised parts of the country, things may be different.

Here's the link to the light bar. I picked one up a few weeks ago and was sorely dissappointed. Bottom line is the LED's can't be aimed low enough to be usefull in most in bed reading positions. Here's my post on the subject.

The pillow light looks like a cool concept though!

Thanks to this thread I just bought the Dorcy 1AA 3LED. It's not bad. I don't know what I'll do with it, but it was fun to check it out.

Well, here in the big city of St Louis, once the 4th largest city in the US (OK that was a very long time ago /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif ), the Eddie Bauer is in a different isle several down from the flashlight isle.

I was disgusted with the Vector LED light.

Dim for something so needlessly large, powered off 4 AAs. No regulation, either.

Ah, StLouis, the home of the Wualtas since before the '04 World's Fair. But homesickness needn't concern us here; I should have made myself clearer: the Eddie Bauer stuff is separate from the toy stuff, though not by much. It's all in the sports/automotive area. The toys are all nicely crammed together, as they were in the golden days of Stix Baer and Fuller.

Thanks for both correcting my bad link and reviewing the light! The Pillow version does look more useful, and what a conversation piece! Dig those decorator colors.

I bought a 1 AA 3led Dorcy and like the way it works, my only problem is that I stuck it in a pocket with some loose chage, and a dime got stuck in fron of the lense. there is a tranparent bezel that will allow a dime to fit very snug and flushg inside the bezel. I had to cut most of the way through the bezel to get low enough to pry out the dime.

I f you don't believe me just try it, I dare you.

Bill,

You're right, a dime is a perfect fit. I had to press on the dime to get to snap in place /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon15.gif

I did put one layer of a zip-lock sandwich bag under the dime before I snapped it in place. The fit was so tight that the plastic tore and I thought I might have a permanent beam cover. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/hahaha.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thinking.gif
I did get the dime out, but just barely. I'm not going to try it again. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif

Same thing happened to me with the 2AA 4-LED Dorcy. I really had to whack it to get the &@#( dime back out!

Small bump.
I just bought the Panther Vision "Taplight" at Target. It was marked down to $4.98. Tap it on, and it goes off in 30sec. Pretty nifty.

...Look for a EB Luxeon to hit Target stores this fall.

I saw the Coast Luxeon at Lowes along with the other Coasts and noticed it was pretty bright but also $44.

Is that the EB one Target will probably get?

For $44 I could get an Inova or maybe a Pelican 1 watt.

Great news. The Dorcy 1AA 3 LED light is a great host for the new high efficiency 5mm LEDs. Easy to change (see old threads)and the beam width can be greatly improved by opening up - i.e. heavily chamfering - the LED holder which makes it into a medium flood and increases overall light output. Mine puts out about 120 cd with Batterystation lithiums.

Too bad none of the Targets near me have any yet.
