Hi there. Log time... few mods, since i posted anything here.

Well... i know, it's an old one and perhaps too many done it already. (Just a joke:nana:)
But, in the spirit of modding and recycling, i want to share this "already old" mod :D
Got, just before Christmas, a pair of 3D M@gs. A real bargain as i got two for the price of one. And in pretty good shape.
Gone whose the bulb, even before my leds arrived.
Being in love with SSC's P4, there whose no other alternative.
U bin for lumens and H bin for Vf:

Lacking a lathe, or at least a proper one, i whose unable to machine a nice and smooth... and proper heatsink. So, it still had to look good, be good and, come cheap.
Heatsink 1:

This one really whose too heavy. (Perhaps just good enough for P7)

If anyone ever dismantled an old hard-disk, might notice that the spindle motor has a nice, aluminum rotor, perfectly smooth and with, either six holes spaced as made for a star heatsink or at least a small rise in the center that will fit a bare emitter.

After several changes of mind... and several spindle rotors:

Minimal machining on the spacer rings, found also in the old drive, and and the core they fit like a dream inside the m@gs barrel.

A bit of thermal grease between the rings and the rotor, and a copper rod inserted in place of the steel shaft that whose there, and there is an almost ready-made P4 sink.

As the slug on p4 is + and the sink will go to gnd, a small piece of silicone rubber and a bit thermal grease will provide the electrical insulation and proper thermal conductivity.
Regular, slow curing epoxy glue, holds the led on the sink and a vice along two washers kept the led pressed hard overnight.

There is no regulator, inside, at least for now. After I'll make or buy a god an reliable, this M@g will stay almost dd, as there is only a 0.22ohm resistor to limit the led's rage to 700mA. Once with the driver, I'll pump in a full amp.. perhaps more. (btw, anyone knows how far, a SSC P4, will go, with all the proper sinking will take without blowing? )


Now, that another hefty torch joined my collection, :devil: and the spare bulb in the tailcap had no sense anymore, i whose thinking to put a small lithium battery, a micro switch and a cree or a SSC star as an emergency spare light. Something tough and waterproof. (any ideas? )

Anyway, the other M@g will get a P7 and the big copper cored sink. But that somewhere next year.
For now i'll settle with this one...

Nice. :thumbsup: Just a few questions:

Did you use manual exposure when you took the beam shots? The Q5 DD should be much brighter unless the batteries are busy dying.
What is a M@g? :poke:

I used manual exposure for almost all shots. Especially for the beam shots.
I'm not 100% sure, but i remember using iso100 and 1/60sec exposure.
Yes, the tiny Cree dd torch should be much brighter than that pic but actually not very much brighter.
And... about the leds. Now, living on the far(and dark) side of Earth, i have just about 4 local led and high power leds supplier. Lacking a debt card, for now, prevents me from plunging into cpf marketplace or dx superstore :D
Anyway, http://www.zexstar.ro is my only supplier of good quality leds. The others sell chinese, low performance and heavy priced leds.
I bought from them and got :poke:'ed .
The problem, with zexstar is that i don't know about they're international transporting fees. I pay about 3$ for each delivery.(and that's no fun when buying one or two leds. )

Nice tutorial and pictures! I have taken apart a few old HD's to take the magnets out. I vaguely remember the central spindle being like you describe.
Next time I will save this part of the hard drive too! Sending you a PM.

Now i'm keening to put my greasy little hands on a few SSC P7 and fantasizing of hid kit for the next two projects :devil:
