Here are the explanations. A $1 is used directly behind the pouch as a size reference. In order...
'edc' = my EDC gear. Pouch (when outside). Wallet and Microtech Auto Amphibian.
'empty' = a shot of the pouch when open. at the very bottom of the shot is a pouch incorporated into the back, rear portion of the inside of the pouch. Visible here is the web of elastic. On the other side is another internal pouch. I don't use this one for right now.
'front' = front of the pouch, packed with stuff.
'inside' = in the pouch, gear as I carry it. Fisher space pen is tucked in between the Wave (left of it)and the X5T in the webbing. Lighter is to the right. I don't smoke, but having a pocket torch like this can come in handy (light soldering, need fire, etc.) Directly behind the Wave is a small pair of tweezers with a small lanyard (so it doesn't get lost). [note the shape of the pouch ... tapered so the mouth is larger than the bottom, allowing for quick access of gear. After opening, I kind of have to "put everything back together" to make it into an efficient package. Not a problem, but elastic on the sides would aid with this).
'rear' = rear shot of the pouch showing the attaching mechanism. I would probably replace this with a velcro strap, kinda er... hard to explain, probably like the pouch in the first post? This method of carry works very well, however, and is quick on-quick off of rope or web belts. Might just leave as-is.
"side" = side view. Note the elastic band on hanging off the front. It is too large to act as a rubber band to keep the pouch contents secure against each other. I suppose if you utilize the maximum volume of the pouch, it would work fine but with my stuff, tis too large. Thinking of a mod for this.
"the stuff" = all the junk I carry in the pouch. Note same elastic band on pouch that is mentioned above. left to right, generally... my visene (wearing contacts today) the micro torch, fisher bullet pen, comb, leatherman wave, folded write in rain paper, inova. Not shown is a paperclip (?), needle (aka steel toothpick)
and some aspirin that I keep in the zippered front.
What would I do different? I'd put more elastic webbing where I would need it most. As of now, the lighter kinda just sits in the main pocket because the Wave is using the largest section of webbing. The two smaller sections of webbing on either side of this are too small, enough to accomodate a pen but nothing really of a larger diameter.
Also, would like to have zippers or velcro on the inside pockets. I guarantee if you put coins or something in there, they'll come out if you toss the pouch around.
Would also put some elastic straps on the outside of the pouch to help keep it closed. It really can hold a lot more volume than I really use due to the tapered design. The mouth folds out a lot, which is nice because if I want the lighter, wave, etc. I can just unvelcro the front flap and everything is made available without spilling all over the place.
Yeah, this pouch is pocket-sized, meaning that if you want you can tailor what gear you want to carry in it enough so it will fit in your pocket if you don't like carrying it outside of your pocket. I tried pocket carry for a while but it's so convenient to carry outside and relatively unobtrusive, so I carry it on my belt when going outside.
Am thinking about changing the Inova out with something different. Also the Wave. These two items really add to the relative weight of the pouch, but other than that, it's great.
I looked around a lot on the net for something like this and New Sun Gear made this one which was the closest to what I wanted.
Unfortunately for me, I don't have a sewing machine (yet) so major mods are going to have to wait.
