Hi, a bit of a flashlight beginner here.

What kind of flashlight with key chain attachment do you guys recommend? My only guideline really is something bright and affordable around $50 or so.

What kind of battery would you prefer? I'm assuming you want a keychain light?

Check out the Fenix LD01, Olight i3, Klarus MiX6, Thrunite Ti (you can buy 5 for $50 at the current sale), Fourseven's Preon, and more.
:welcome:

+1, start with the battery size. My first attempt at a keychain light was 123 based. Couldn't stand the bulk, so I changed to a 10280 (short AAA size) and haven't looked back.

The 3 popular options, in increasing diameter:

AAA (10180/10280/10440)
AA (14500)
123 (16340)

I like my Klarus Mi10, I load it with a lithium ion AAA, and it pumps out up to 80 lumens for a long time...works great on my key chain.

I also use an Xtar Meteor with a single IMR123, which pumps out 500 lumens on max and is built like a tank. It has both a magnetic base which is nice as a task light (clipped to the underside of the hood, you can look around under there very easily, etc...its a floody beam), and a chain with clip...which I attach to a belt loop and tuck the light into my back pocket. When needed, I simply grab the belt loop clip, and pull out the light...works well for me. Its also a great tailstand light, as with 500 lumens, a ceiling bounce lights the entire room up.

:D

You can also check out Maratac (several AAA lights), Titanium Innovations (Illumina and IlluminaTi), and the DQG. I personally settled on the DQG Titanium as it is the tiniest AAA light I could find with optics. The Preon P0 is a few mm shorter, but it is a pure flood light... it's a great light too, but I wanted a focused beam on my keychain.

For me the DQG AAA is the perfect keychain light. Tiny and bright with two well-spaced modes (the magnetic tail is a very nice bonus). It beat out the others including the Thrunite Ti, P0, i3 and IlluminaTi (all of which I own and are great lights).
