Complimenting 18650 Flashlights?

Hey guys - first post on this forum.

I'm looking for a versatile duo of LED flashlights, one for long range applications (hello Dereelight DBS) and one for closer (~30 m) applications. I've pretty much set my mind on the DBS, but want another LED flashlight with high output for close ranges, running on 18650s. I would love to get a Fenix P3D, but alas... battery configuration.

I'm trying to keep the varieties of batteries to a minimum. I was thinking of an M1-R hunter with OP reflector... but the fact is that the regulation seems abysmal.

Can anyone clue me into to a slightly smaller, high output close range 18650 LED? I should probably also throw in that I don't need 8 thousand light levels (three would be fine), and a rear clicky would be highly appreciated. Price range up to 90 dollars for this guy.

Thanks guys.

Welcome, Mercaptan. There's a wealth of information here at your fingertips -- and lots of opinions, too. My opinions are free -- and worth every penny.

Look into the Dereelight CL1H. Like the DBS it's also upgradable and many parts interchange with the DBS. I ordered one the other day and am awaiting the shipment of the V3.0 lights. At $69 with the DBS interchangeable 3-mode Q4 module it's well within your price range.

Does this mean they are worth nothing? :)

Nah, he's just implying that the U.S. dollar has actually crashed to nothing in value. It's all because of the Canadians I reckon. ;)

Thanks for recommending the CL1H... I'm definitely starting to look in that direction.

Dereelight DBS and CL1H V3.0! I have a DBS anda CL1H V2.0 and a V3.0 on the way. With the various modules available you can set either light up in a variety of ways. Right now I have a 5-stage module in my CL1H with an OP for close range stuff, and the DBS with the 3-stage and SMO reflector for long range.

When I get the V3.0 I'll have a CL1H setup for throw with a SMO reflector and 3-stage module, and the other with the 5-Stage and OP reflector.

All take 18650's obviously. The great thing is the modules (pills) can be interchanged between the DBS and CL1H.

For true versatility, I highly recommend the SureFire FM34 Beam Diffuser (RRP: $29):-

http://www.surefire.com/maxexp/main/co_disp/displ/carfnbr/249/prrfnbr/867/FM34-Beam-Diffuser

It will transform any hotspot into a gentle diffused light for close-up use. Best thing is, you can just flip it back when you don't need it.

Only issue is, the SF lights (eg 6P, C2) do not accept 18650s so you will need to get a Leef 18650 C-C tube (available from Lighthound - $44.99):-

http://www.lighthound.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=2607

With this, you will have an excellent set-up that covers all your needs - a long-throw light (DBS) and another light for both close-up (with the diffuser) and medium distance (without the diffuser).

I realise the above will bust your $90 limit unless you already have a P60-type head and an SF tailcap lying around.

The alternative would be to look for a non-SF light that can accept the FM34 diffuser (even better if it can take 18650). It should ideally have a non-crenellated bezel so that the diffuser can fit flush. The only light I have which fits the bill is an old G&P T8 but there may be others.

I use an Amilite Neo T5 for closer ranges and it's simply perfect. Check it out:
