Hi, I found this great forum via glowgadgets.com. Im looking for a decent flashlight to use when I go on holiday, with a budget of £50/$100.

So far ive found the fenix p1dce, but are there any better alternatives to this that dont cost the earth? cheers! :)

The new Fenix L2DCE is cheaper and just as bright, and uses the more common AA batteries over CR123. Of course, it's also larger. :)

Both are great all-purpose lights.

thanks for the reply. Ive had a look at the l2dce and it seems like a nice torch, plus having the switch on the back looks handy. now to just find a place in the uk that stocks it, or a place in the us that will post overseas!

There are quite a few options on the market now (or just about out): Jetbeam Mk IIx, Lumapower D Mini /M1 /M3, Amlite Neo T5, Rexlight 2.0, and others. The big things to compare imho are battery type, ui (different brightness settings, and how you activate these settings), and beam type. Good luck!

main usage will be for when the electricity goes out as im off to a rural village in south asia where the electricity isnt really that good. only a short 2 week stay but id rather get a decent flashlight instead of the normal £10 budget ones which die after 2 mins

How about one of the Maglite LED flashlights? They use ordinary batteries, are bright, and (at least in the US) are inexpensive. And they can operate in candle mode. I think the 3 cell AA might just be the ticket for you.

Hi gib, WELCOME TO OUR MADNESS! Anyhow, you'll be better off with the L2D-CE since it uses AA cells. As PhantomPhoton said, there are other alternatives. Check this thread for a list of lights which uses the Cree emitters. I'll stick with these as the crees are more efficient than the standard Luxeon I or III LEDs. They are also new technology so they'll be noticably more expensive than a light with a Luxeon LED.

Check out flashlightreviews.com for LOTS of information.

+1 on the Fenix L2D (L1D if you want something even smaller). Hard to beat as a travel light.

Might also want to check out the upcoming Lumapower M3.
Or the Rexlight, if you're on a tight budget.

Fenix L1D-Ce...soon you will be able to purchase the 2 AA body and maybe the 123 body. But the L1D is more travel...EDC friendly.

Chevrofreak has some runtimes done for the Fenix L2D (linked in his sig), and the runtime on medium is pretty impressive compared to the MagLed 2AA.

If you use the L2D on low, it will run for 2.5 days straight on a set of alkalines.

Given that you're going to be using it while travelling to a rural area, I don't think a CR123 light (P1D CE or Amilite) is preferable, as it would be easier to get AA locally if needed. Good luck with your choices and travel.

You want small: Fenix L1D-CE
You want power: Fenix L2D-CE
MagLed suck, the 2AA is WAY too long, should use 3 AAs with this lenght. Its no multilevel (in Reality its the low level, that is needed most), dim and worse beam.

gotta check the other better lights mentionned, but for now the Fenix are hard to beat.
PS: if You dont need multilevel, there are quite a number of Fenix-lookalikes at the cost of Magled. At dealextreme f.e.
I'd also vote for fenix-store or lighthound instead of waiting for a shop in the UK. Just a few days ago one member mentionned an Brit-Pound price that would be around € 65,-- for a L2D, but my card invoice states € 45,-- from fenix-store.
