Considering a Gerber Infinity Ultra

I'm tempting to get the Gerber Infinity Ultra primarily for the following reasons I've learned from various reviews

1. decent clean floody beam (artifact free)
2. good price / performance (decent builds, long runtime)
3. being a proven and well known model with long history.

However before pulling the trigger, I have the following questions

1. How bright is it compared to Fenix E01? I'm happy enough for its low output floody beam.
2. How is its size compared to Nitecore D10 I'm fond of. I would much prefer if it could be smaller than the D10. Would be hard pressed if it is any larger.

*Update*

I finally got 2 Gerber Infinity Ultras from sigman at a bargain price and find it to be a pleasant solid floody lights.

Photo taken with Nitecore D10 Q5 (pre-ordered lot). Arr just noticed that the lights was out of focus. I should have switched to macro mode.

I do not have a Fenix E01, but the Gerber is a maybe 10 lumens of flood, and is a great light for just finding your way around the house, or working on the inside of your PC. They are rock solid, tough lights that will run many hours before they quit. The Infinity is a little smaller than the Nitecore D10. Just slightly shorter, maybe 1/6 inch, and a tad thinner. Hope this helps!

The GIU on L91's is about the same brightness as the E01.

There are a couple pics of the GIU and D10 side by side if you search for them.

Thanks guys. I'm happy with what I'm hearing so far. I tend to gravitate toward a KISS light lately. Thanks for the pointer to the marketplace thread, I've shot a PM to the seller for 2 GIUs already.

FYI, another bonus of the Gerber UI that may not be widely known is in a pinch it will work with a AAA battery (yes a AAA battery in a AA light) Very handy if you find yourself short a AA and have a AAA available.

Indeed..My latest outdoor light system includes an AA flashlight, Petzl Taktikka XP (AAA) and GIU with am AAA-AA adapter to run the partly used hadlamp batteries...And the light is almost bombo-proof...

Good point, Oddjob. My battery drainer AA (Lowe's Taskforce 1AA) regularly sees a AAA, too. Should work fine in the Infinity.

Thanks Oddjob for that info on using a AAA battery in the Gerber Infinity Ultra. I just tried it and it worked! It didn't work in my ConneXion X2 though.
Is it common for AA operated lights to be able to also use AAAs or only certain type of lights?

Thanks.

It's also a pretty easy mod to get a new led in there.

I've modded a couple to GS leds. Twice as bright, rectangular hotspot.

I sanded one of them (the led) to get a nice smooth, floody beam with decent tint.

Someone on here mentioned that Gerber has upgraded the IU and it is believed to have a DS or GS, I'm unable to find the post right now, but there was a way to find out if it's a newer version. Will post if I find it.

I believe there was a single digit change to the UPC number to denote the upgrade. Good if you are buying in person, but impossible to know if you are buying the upgraded version online.

The two I bought locally in late 2008 plus the one I got from CFRlights last month all have the same UPC number.
The last 5 digits match what is on the Gerber site (80012).

On November 10, 2008, I received this from Gerber CS:

Hi Brad,

Thank you for contacting Gerber Blades. The Infinity Ultra uses Nichia
CS bulbs.

Sincerely,
Consumer Affairs

From rockynational.com (posted by Photon Joe) The manufacterer #s for the latest LED's is any # at or above 80027 for the m model and 80012 for the standard ultra.

You might be able to ask whoever you order from to make sure it's one of the new versions.

i prefer the E01 because its small enough to put on a keychain (at least for me, its the only thing other than my few keys that i have on my keychain), but the infinity ultra is nice.

the E01 is slightly brighter within its narrower area, but the infinity ultra has a wider flood. overall they are probably the same brightness.

also Oddjob, thanks for the info about the ability to use an AAA in it... AAs are more common and i have 4 AA eneloops and the infinity ultra is my only AA light. but still its good to know. it made perfect sense to me when i heard it since there are springs at both ends, theres a lot of give. this is actually what was causing me problems at one point, with the light flickering, which is why i stopped carrying it in my pocket and bought the E01.

personally though, if im going larger than keychain, i do like the idea of a multimode light. id love to be able to go brighter if i needed it, but for an EDC long runtime is my number one priority, thus the IU and E01

I think the Infinity Ultra has been updated to a Nichia GS or DS l.e.d.. I bought one yesterday and it is at least 4x brighter than my old one with a BS l.e.d.. It is at least twice as bright as my Fenix EO1. It was slightly dimmer than the 15 lumen low of my Fenix L1T version 2.0. I'd say it's about 12 lumens. I wanted to wait until they ran out of CS l.e.d.s before I attempted to get one. Seems like I waited long enough. For $15 at REI, I couldn't resist.

So would you say its brighter than the L1T-2.0 low? The L1T is a solid 15 Lumens, and I find it blinding at night... that would make the IU far too bright(IMHO) for night vision preservation.
