My main gripe about the PAL's is they use 9V batteries. They claimed a while back to be working on a 2AA version. Other than that, they're real nice, and $15.75 is a bargain.
The Paklite is ridiculous, I can't believe anyone pays $30 for one of those things. It needs a special $10 9V lithium battery to live up to its runtime claims, and that battery isn't even included!
LRI (Photon)'s warranty service is very good. Call 541-925-3741 and ask for the warranty service department, and explain the problem with your Photon 3. They will take care of it.
All that said, I haven't really wanted adjustable brightness in a small light. The Arc AAA, CMG Infinity/Ultra, etc. are all fine with me. Either use at full brightness, or dim by putting your finger over the LED and letting out the amount of light you need.
