I'm looking for a copper mcpcb to centrally mount a single XM-L with a direct thermal connection to the copper.

Does the diameter of a copper mcpcb affect it's properties in any way?

So far commercially I've found 16mm, 20mm, 32mm

Other than diameter, is there any reason the sinkpad would outperform the led-tech?

Also, would there be any performance difference between a 1mm and 1.5mm thick copper mcpcb? (Sinkpad SP-C40 vs SP-C50)

The only thing I know is Sinkpad now offers 5 different free samples to companies but not to hobbyists like me.

EDIT: They sent me 4 free samples for luxeon rebels. Cheers to them for helping a hobbyist.

My experience is that the MCPCB is great for low- to mid-range power. Beyond that, the ultimate modder will reflow-solder to the heatsink or something. What does the datasheet say about *C/W? That's what you'll be interested in for performance indication.
 
Ok, just finished an order with Kris from SinkPAD, he was very helpful, sent me pics/schematics to ensure I was getting the right piece, and I was very surprised by their affordable minimum order. He cleared up the difference in their two copper depths: "1.50mm copper will have better thermal performance compare to 1.0mm copper. I do not have specific data at this point but we have seen the difference."

He said they'll have an online store soon, but for now to order just email [email protected]

Minumum order (before shipping): $45 for all aluminum, $75 if any copper included
You can mix & match to meet the minimum, I bought 3 of these, 4 of those, 1 of that... as long as you meet the minimum order value you're good to go.

Aluminum:
1-300pcs = $1 each
301-600 = $0.75 each
601-1000 = $0.60 each
1001-2500= $0.50 each

Copper:
1-300pcs = $2.50 each
301-600 = $1.50 each
601-1000 = $1.25 each
1001-2500= $1 each

They come loose or in 15up arrays

I dont have any graphs to support this yet, but those copper sink pads are the bomb. I have driven XPG2 and XPE2 to double the rated output with manageable heat even in small lights with these.

I ordered a batch of the XML and XPG/E pads that I will offer to CPF in a couple days.

Isnt there not much difference anymore then? (When heated up?)
 
THe matter is heat conductivity. Ultimately, it does not matter how hot your light is, but how hot your LED die is.

A normal aluminium star, with a insulating layer between the LED and the aluminium, can easily ad more thermal resistance than anything else in the light combined.

In a copper star, you are directly coupled to the copper (at least in the led-tech ones) - any other interface will have a surface area of at least a factor 25 more than the LED has to the star, making thermal contact much less critical
