Knew a person that was in the tryouts for the US Winter Olympic Ski team. That's as close as I've ever got.

Know a woman who was invited to try out for the USA shooting team many years ago when she was still a teenager. That's as close as I've ever got. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I was a pretty good runner when I was a kid also. I had an older brother and the only way to keep him from whooping up on me was to outrun him /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grinser2.gif And I could outrun him. Amazing what fear can do for your athletic ability /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

To be honest I do not remember. I just remember that we all had to run when we were in the 9th grade and I had the 2nd fastest time in my highschool. I dont even remember how far we ran. I know it was a long way but as far as miles I do not remember. To me it was just something I had to to. I could sprint pretty good also. But again I do not remember any of my times. I had coaches approach me while in high school wanting me to compete but I did not have the time. I was raised on a small farm and while my friends were playing sports I was gettting up hay, picking corn (6 acres of corn by hand), working in the garden, slaughtering hogs, making molasses, tending to honey bee hives, feeding chickens and cows, and everything else that had to be done. So I never was able to play any sports in school. But yes I could run very fast. And I was as skinny as a rail but I dont remember losing any fights in school. I guess all that farm work paid off one way or another /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif.

Closest I came - I used to hang out in this "strange" little bicycle shop. I say "strange" because most folks had NO clue what the shop was about - wierd hours, strange stock etc. It turns out it was the local SERIOUS bike shop, that mostly catered to track riders (and some road racing as well). The guy who owned the shop was the head of the US Cycling Team's Youth development program (He told me to watch Lance Armstrong back when Lance was around 12!!)

Anyway, one night in 1984 (I did say they kept strange, mostly non posted hours) I'm hanging with the serious riders when the front door opens, and in walks about 3-4 members of the Olympic team - just back from LA, where the US took a bunch of medals - they had come in to show Al the hardware. So we all got to see and hold them, sit around and talk for a few hours

I know this is not olympic related but KC21XE's post made me think about it. Lance Armstrong trains on the road I live on. I live on hwy 268 in North Carolina and he rides by my house and goes all the way to Grandfather Mountain.

I can't imagine what it feels like to represent my state, I know what it feels like. I would like to know how it feels to be on the podium ar the Olympics, but hate to take fourth.
