CPF Colors

Those who were here at the beginning remember I tried light text on a dark background. My version of the old LED Musuem layout. There were many complaints.

So I found the 'pill' icons. And matched the colors through the rest of the board. The ability to read posts without eyestrain dissappeard.

Eventually the colors became official 'CPF Blue'. To the point that Peter Gransee made a special run of Arc AAA's in blue.

Are these colors getting old? Is it time for change?

Perhaps a little clarification should be made. Any change would not be drastic. Like going to some ridiculous color like... PURPLE!!

The blue would stay. But the shades would be changed to make them brighter and crisper.

i like it just the way it is. the light blue is perfect for reading the text. any darker and it would be more difficult to read. i think light colors are the way to go. plus it would take a long time to get used to the new color scheme.
also, i like the light blue and the lighter blue, it is a noticable difference, but not so distinct as to distract from the text or to make it look layered.

Agreed. A good UI stays out of the way so you hardly notice it. Bright and bold colors are the hallmark of spam, banner adds, and high school HTML projects (no offense, Saaby). Boring fonts and colors make things readable and keep the focus on the discussions, not the board itself.

A change would be okay as long as it doesn't make the content less readable.

Er, well, mmmm, better turn off my TRS banner for this instance then I guess....
(at least it`s individual- you can`t deny that).

Personally, Candlepower Forums would not be Candlepower Forums if it weren`t all blue and white. I vote to keep it as-is.

And besides, I still have a design for a home page (nice and low bandwidth unlike my original attempt)) that has been submitted for consideration for months, and largely ignored. I kinda hope that one day, somehow, it`ll get used- and I won`t need to change the colours first....

Okay, I should probably qualify my statement.

I'm willing to concede that bold colors are actually okay sometimes, but they should be used sparingly. It's a common cycle for me at least:

1. Install a new piece of software, open a new online account, etc., and customize it with a really cool color scheme.

2. Bask in the refreshing boldness, strut around with a spring in my step and a new sense of confidence--I'd a go-getter now!

3. Realize after a while that it's actually kind of annoying and switch to something plain and simple that is easier on the eyes.

4. ... <some time later> get bored and decide it's time for something new, go back to step 1.

I only make it to steps 3 and 4 with stuff I actually use a lot, and CPF falls under that category. If it's something I won't see a lot it's kind of nice to have something more adventurous even if it makes my eyes sore after a while.

Remember flashing text in HTML? When Netscape first started supporting it, *every* web site starting using flashing text everywhere. Pretty soon everyone realized it was an abomination from the lower levels of hell and now you rarely see flashing text. I think it's a similar principle at work.

One last analogy (especially for the CPF audience)--colored LEDs. I always think colored LED flashlights are cool and every once in a while I feel compelled to buy one. I soon realize that white is more useful all around and the colored gadget sits on the shelf (okay, who am I kidding? it sits in a huge pile of junk on my desk, but that's not the point) relegated to novelty status. When I want a feeling of "gee-wiz" the flashing colored Photon III is great, but in the end it's plain, boring white Arc AAA (CPF edition, of course) that sits on my keychain.

So Chris M., I promise I won't mistake your review site for a porn spam site just because it has a bright orange background (it looks pretty cool), but if I start obsessively reloading it many times a day I may email you with a polite request for some softer colors. Until then, go crazy!

Ahem... may I interject here for a moment? Where did I say BOLDER? Or flashier?... No, I said brighter and crisper. And I do believe I said that it would still be blue. And I didn't mention anything about making it difficult to read.

But in all fairness, I'm in a class with dozens of other little children and yes--some of those pages are very in your face!

So...how about Excel green? Or maybe PowerPoint Orange...

Sasha---I am happy with the current colors. If you hadn't asked I never would have noticed the color scheme; and that's the way it should be. CPF is very readable the way it is. Good colors. Good fonts. Good bandwidth. CPF is an all-around very well designed forum.
