CPF\'s New Search

I really like this new function..
-If you haven't tried it yet, you're in for a big surprise.

For instance, it will search through ALL of the two dozen odd different forums on this board, and will even take you directly to the appropriate post.

I would hasten to recommend that you don't use the "search ALL forum" feature if you're pretty sure which forum the post is in. I imagine it is quite a bandwidth hog in ALL mode. But, it'll be REALLY great when you lose a thread you were interested in and can't seem to find it anywhere.

The search page isn't really a bandwidth hog. The only network activity it generates is when giving you the results page (and the page with the form at the beginning). You probably use a lot more bandwidth reading through the threads that it finds than performing the search.

Searching all forums will slow the machine down and tax the database more, but all the stuff it searches through doesn't get transmitted across the network (the search all happens on the server) so it doesn't incur extra bandwidth use charges. I wouldn't worry about doing big searches unless you are worried about slowing the system down (while your search is in progress the whole board will run slower) or having to wait too long (searching more forums takes longer). It doesn't translate directly to higher cost of running the board unless excessive searching calls for hardware upgrades.

Oh yeah, and the option to go directly to the right post can save a lot of bandwidth on long topics since you don't have to page through a bunch of posts looking for the one you are interested in.

Good points, r2. Thanks. I hope it works well for everybody. I know that I've been frustrated in the past by NOT being able to search all forums.

When doing a search all, it would be nice if the results were displayed as they are found so you could interrupt the search and go to the post if you see it being present. As it stands now you are not shown the results of the search until it is complete.

My only concern (and frustration) comes from the fact that the search takes you back chronologically only so far based on the number of hits, and then stops. If the desired thread or post was a day earlier you are out of luck.

Is there any way around this?

I agree with Brightnorm--it seems to only search the last 30 days or so.

I've "lost" many things that I used to refer to now that I can't search back farther.

<font size="2" face="Verdana, Arial">I just tried searching a thread in a forum I started in March 2001, and it worked fine. BUT, the search had to be limited to a definite forum-Not all of the forums at once (as in "search ALL forums") -I just used the "any date" selection in the box.

I wish a member search could be implemented. I'm trying to find the guy named "MCD" but I don't know his user number and I'm not having any luck searching thousands of threads. :-/
