For anyone interested, I think I found the type of die Cree uses in their latest high performance InGaN (Indium Gallium Nitride) green, blue and (probably) white 5mm LEDs

The die and contact pad shapes seem to match up quite well.
These are the brightest 5mm LEDs I have found. The trapezoidal vertical cross section allows a lot of light to escape from the sides and is thrown into the die cup reflector.
