Do any of you guys know if Cree is going to come out with an led similar to a Luminus design? Meaning, is cree going to come out with a led with 1500+ lumens? A good example of this would be the sst90, puts out over 2250 lumens.

No. None of us know. Doubtful, though. Luminus is for projection, Cree seems to be focused on lighting.

It's difficult to design conventional luminaires with such concentrated power. We have an LED unit at work with about 50 1-watt LEDs in a hexagon. It's the same physical size as a 100-w Metal Halide fixture, but brighter with nicer light. No optics in a high-bay ceiling works well. But a few thumbnail-sized chips would require a better heatsink, be more painful without a diffuser, and so on.
