XP-E's die is smaller than XP-G's, meaning that it has higher surface luminosity density, resulting in higher lux when focused and, thus, better throw.

XP-E will give a tighter spot and more throw with slightly less overall brightness.
XP-G will give a larger spot and more flood with slightly more overall brightness.
 
If the lumen ratings are correct, the XP-E should have more throw since the surface area of XP-E is smaller. The XP-G should have a larger hot spot and brighter spill, but less throw since the lumens are more diffused and not as focused. This is assuming they have the same reflector.

It really comes down to the range you intend to use the light at. If you are using it to walk around, light up things that are less than 50-100 feet away, the XP-G would be my pick. If you are trying to spot things at 100+ feet the XP-E should give you more reach.
 
All else being equal, the XP-E should throw a bit better and the XP-G should flood a bit better.

XP-E should have smaller hotspot; XP-G should have larger hotspot.

What do you want to use the light fo?

Ok well It is going in a Maglite 3D, I want it for walking and general messing about with, I quite like a good throw but I am not to bothered about lighting someones house up in the next village.

How much bigger would the hotspot on the XPG be? Or is that a silly question? Or If the XPE had a throw of say 300m, how would the XPG compare?

I would estimate that the XP-G hotspot should be roughly twice the diameter of the XP-E which would be a more pencil like beam. Also if the XP-G brightness is only 20 lumens more then the XP-G should also provide longer runtime, as it is actually around 30% more efficient overall than the XP-E (R5 and R2 bins assumed).

This also suggests that the XP-G is driven to a lower current, this coupled with the higher efficiency means less heat produced by the XP-G. In a small drop-in module like this that could be an important factor as running in a hot environment can lower the efficiency of an LED.

Looks like the XPG is the one to go for then, as I am more interested in what's going on in front of me than 200ft in the distance.

Here is a beam shot from his web site for the XPE. Unfortunately he does not have one for the XPG. I see what you mean about the beam.
