I'd like to start off by saying I have not been on these forums in some time and that it is good to be back on here. I just caught myself looking at the Nu-Flare 77R92L on Amazon after narrowing down the search with multiple filters and realized how silly I was after remembering this awesome forum. To this point, my Amazon searches have all been rather fruitless, so here I am looking for quality advice for my current needs.

My current situation is I am going on two relatively long distance bicycle rides during the summer and my Malkoff 3D Maglite is not gonna do the trick. The first ride of the summer won't be very long and should have a large caravan following, but the second ride will be a little over 120 miles round trip spread over 2 days with just a few friends of mine on back roads. This second trip is the main reason I am here needing advice as we plan to camp out as well. With that said, I'll try to answer the basic questions as best as I can so you all can better help me. I've included a text form and document form for user preference. Thanks!

Text form: I would prefer the flashlight to be available on Amazon.com as my current method of payment will be gift cards and credit card cash back money, but if it is worth it, I can pull for something that is not listed on Amazon. I am a broke college student, so unfortunately, my budget is around $25-45 max. I don't care for things on my keychain, but this needs to be small enough to pack easily. Something like an EDC 3-4 inch. As for the source, I'd say LED, but I don't really know any better. I would prefer to use alkalines, but that is mainly because I do not know much about other batteries such as NiHM. If the battery you have in mind is cost-effective, then I'm all ears. For brightness, probably something around 100 to 200 lumens as I will be on back roads and camping in random places. I would also like a good reach on this light. Something like 20-100 yards would be nice since I will be in unknown outdoor settings, but I'm not entirely sure how much throw I need as I don't know how it affects the versatility. I don't plan to overly use the light, but it could be necessary in the building of our tents/campsite if we stop at sunset or later. 30-90+ minutes battery life should do since I plan to carry one set of backup alkalines. I would also like a minimum of 2 light levels. Switch type, UI, coating, and special needs are not really defined in my case. Let's just say I don't want a light made out of cardboard and I wouldn't mind a button for the light switch.

One would be best - the less people have to sort through, and the more to the point, the better.

Since you put in the effort, I went ahead and made it even more readable. I've done the same thing as you a lot, and came to realize that separating specs out like this makes a post more likely to be read all the way through.

You can copy and paste this revision into your post if you don't mind, and just get rid of the long form.

Reading through your list I'm going to suggest one of my all time favorites, the Quark MiNi AA in a neutral tint.
It's got three levels, and also blinking modes which don't get in the way or normal usage, and one of the blinking modes is a beacon that is a useful as your imagination can make it.
Otherwise, still a wonderful three level light that is barely larger than a AA battery, with one of the nicest general purpose beam patterns on the market.

Final suggestion considering your income level would be to put up an ad in the CPFMarketPlace of which lights you're looking for and pay less than new for your light.
 
Thanks for the input. I've been reading up on various threads and vendor websites all day (literally) and have narrowed my search down to a handful of lights:

Zebralight SC52w - Out of my budget, but wow, what's not to like?
Xeno 03 - XML2 (output) vs. Nichia 219 (beam quality). This seems more in line with my budget needs, but I am hesitant because I do not know throw or run time.
L3 Illumination L10 - XPG2 vs. Nichia 219. Again, I am hesitant with this for the same reason.
Quark Mini AA - Simple, I like it. With NiMH, I'm not sure a high beam of sub-100 lumens will do it for me. Do you use 14500s with yours? The climate is not cool here, so the high-mode with 14500s would not last very long for me.

There are more models I have been looking at, but I feel like I am all over the board now and not very sure what to do. I am starting to look at any flashlight in my price range, but not really knowing it's weaknesses for my situation and needs. Too much reading!

I use my MiNi AA's with 14500, but don't let my lights ever run on high for long. Definitely heats up and whether it's anything to be concerned about, I'm not sure.
 
I am also looking at the Xeno F7v6 Nichia 219. What do you think of the Nichia 219? Something about the tint is calling my name o_o

Most people think of the 219 as being perfectly neutral, but there is talk of some being warmer than others and I have one in my V10R Ti, making it my favorite of all lights.

I also have a few other lights with classic neutral 119/219 emitters and my 119 Haiku is another light that I always have on me.

That said, I could live with just one of my MiNi AA's if that was all there was, and really not be all that inconvenienced, particularly when you figure it is so inexpensive in comparison with every other light that I like.

As a bicycle commuter, I like to have a light that throws ten seconds ahead. How far that is in yards or meters depends on how fast one rides. As a rule, the slower one rides, the floodier the beam should be. As speed increases, less spill is needed.

I would also strongly recommend using rechargeable cells instead of alkalines. There are several options for rechargeables, but if you are comfortable with alkalines, then low self discharge NiMH are essentially the same thing from a user's perspective. They will have a flatter discharge curve and longer life (IIRC) than alkaline cells. They come in the same sizes you are already familiar with, AA, AAA, etc, and are readily available from Amazon. Lithium-ion cells offer further advantages, but have a much steeper learning curve and require additional precautions.

Dang, that is not what I was hoping to hear, but it is what I was afraid of, lol. I don't know why I am so hesitant. I guess it's because I don't have a lot of money to play with. I'm really thinking about the SC52w, especially since it is coming in a neutral tint with the XML2 emitter. However, it is not the 219 that everyone raves about and is well over my budget. If I wasn't a poor student, I'd buy a handful of these and sell off the ones I didn't want. Decisions, decisions.

Good bicycle lighting advice. I'm not quite looking for a headlight yet, but I'll keep that in mind when I am. Right now I am looking for something more utilitarian if I need to pull over while biking or when I'm no where near home camping out on the road, etc.

As for batteries, I've done some basic reading on NiHM like Eneloops and I'm all on board with them, but I'm not really sure about 14500/16500/18650s as I know nothing about them. This is mostly because the lithium batteries and chargers are more expensive than NiHM. My current idea revolving around the Zebralight SC52w is to pair it up with a 2000mAh Eneloop and to charge it with a BCG34HLD2RN. Light + power puts me at $90-100 which hurts, but I think it may be worth it in the long run. I've always been about quality over quantity anyways. Plus, for some reason, I'm too hesitant on the current Nichia 219 offerings available.

just a few "points" to what You typed, of course just my personal view.

* I have the mini AA warm white, I run it with an 14500, its perfect EDC
* I am not sure, if the actual ones are allowed (?) to be used with an 14500
* 14500 and Ni-Mh rechargeable offer (almost) exactly the same energy and the light is the same brightness - that does not make a difference

imho:
for two of Your three uses, AA/14500 size is good. But for biking there is not enough power in the cell --> 18650 ONLY!
or bring a bunch of the small cells, the mini AA on high will eat through any cell in 50 mins

nichia vs. XP-G ... again, I am the only one "against" the superduperhighCRI-led: You loose output with them.
For the same output You have to put way more power into the nichia. For me - I have high CRI XM-L and nichia, too - the very little gain in "more realistic" colors is extremely overstated and just not worth the reduction of everything else (runtime + brightness)

--> get two lights, one small, one 1*18650, or, being on budget and on "backbacking", think of just the 18650 light ... still small enough to bring along, much longer runtime.
with at least low-high, better low-med-high, thats perfectly capable for the situation. + charger, + 1-2 spare cells, + a bar holder for the bike

if You have a Ni-Hm charger that is cheaper than a mid-quality Li-Ion charger, than its junk and will not get good resulty out of the Ni-Mh cells.
also, if You calculate energy stored into the cells, the 18650 eats AA-Ni-Mhs. + You need less "loose" cells. (1*18650 equals 4-5 Ni-Hms)
Also there is no "learning curve" at all :rolleyes: one gets some normal charger, say XTar or something, some protected Li-Ion cells, and thats it. Use them like the AA have been used before

That's just asking for problems. At an absolute minimum, voltage needs to be monitored before and after charging when Li-ion cells are used. Anyone who claims that Li-ion cells don't require more precautions compared to NiMH cells isn't sufficiently familiar with the technology.

Compared to Li-ion cells? Ni-MH cells require fewer precautions. Take a look here and see how many incidents involved NiMH cells compared to li-ion cells.

Sure, if one does not mind rendering their cells permanently inoperable. Relying on a protection circuit for safety instead of properly monitoring cells is like relying on an airbag to prevent fatalities in an automobile accident instead of using the steering wheel, accelerator, and/or brakes to avoid the accident to begin with.

I ended up pre-ordering the ZL SC52w even though it's out of my budget. I plan to power it with Eneloops. Perhaps later down the road I'll get into lithium ion, but the 280Lm output on NiMH should be sufficient for now.
