hello CPF :-)

i'm working on a project for my '93 SAAB 900... i've purchased two replacement tail lights (one left and one right) to mount some basic LEDs in for the running lights, reverse, and blinkers. probably just a bunch of these:

..using some DIY PCB printed circuit board for the layout/design.

of course, yellow for the blinkers and white for the back-up lights. i haven't thought up a design yet to implement, as the possibilities are great.

however the complicated part comes with the need to have the normal, red running lights (5 watts i beleive), and also the higher powered break light (21 watts i beleive). my plan was to remove the ability for my tail lights to switch up to the 21w with the built in resistor that each LED has on it.

then, the center break light, in the rear window, i was planning on removing, but using the wires to power what is going to be the break light. i'm not sure how to propperly power Luxeon stars, or how to cool them if they need special heatsinks... this is what i'm looking at:

imagine, basically, a 36" lightsaber acting as my break light in the bottom section of my rear window. I could sand the acrylic rod and paint it with a transparent red paint, attach a Luxeon star (with a narrow-directional lens) at each end, and add some tin-foil to the 'back side' of the rod to better direct the light. does this seem feasible?

does a luxeon need a special kind of resistor or power regulator? basic LEDs seems to be far more simplified....

my other idea was to cut the rod in half, and on each rod use one red and one yellow luxeon star, so i could not only brake but include turn signaling functionality. it would be a bit more complicated because i'd have to run some additional wire from the rear turn signal lead, but it shouldn't be that difficult. i think though, for now, i just want a solid brake light.
