Cut the Ultra Violet with lenses?

Hi all,
I guess this may be a pretty basic question for some of you but I am at a loss for the answer myself. A question was brought up today concerning some LED headlamps and fishing. As far as I know fish and especially walleye are sensitive to ultra violet light.
Would it be possible to eliminate (thanks Nerd)the ultra violet specturms from LEDs with colored lenses? What color of lenses would eliminate the greatest amount of the ultra violet light from the white LEDs?
I'll take a guess and say that red would be the best colored lens to illiminate the ultra violet spectrum if this is possible because I know bear, dear and some other animals do not see the red spectrum.
 
Wylie, I think you mean eliminate instead of illiminate correct? You might want to try out camera len's UV filters. They come in different sizes from 49mm, 52mm, 55mm and some other sizes I can't remember at the moment. Might be a bit too big though.
 
There are small UV filters for some of the smaller cameras. My Nikon Coolpix has a 28mm UV filter that would be suitable for some of the smaller handheld lights. there may be some in the 35mm and 40mm ranges for some of the Sony cameras.

I was basically looking for a cheap means of eliminating the ultra violet spectrums of light from whites LEDs. Some fish have phosphorus in their eyes and it makes them ultra sensitive to light and especially ultra violet light. The goal would be a simple colored plastic lens to eliminate the ultra violet spectrums if possible. Fancy coatings and stuff are probably not an option as I see it at this point.

The best way to avoid UV spectrum emissions from white LEDs scaring fish away is to stop dynamiting fish at night. Second best is to switch to red LEDs for your continuous illumination light, and reserve white LED lighting for differentiating lures. A distant third is to put a filter over your existing lights.

If you can get away with just using a standard red LED, you will proabably be happier than dampening your white illumination. The red spectrum is the first light to get filtered out by water. The high power white LEDs that are commonly available are based on blue LEDs with a phosphor and are much more prone to penetrate through water filtration. By not emitting anything in a spectrum that penetrates, you should disturb the fish less. Red LEDs are best for this because they are designed to emit in a tight bandwidth that water should absorb readily.

I am opposed to wasting battery life; generating light only to throw it away on a filter bothers me. I am also not very fond of regulated solutions for the same reasons.

I tend to look at this from the same direction you are and have mention a couple different colored LEDs in a headlamp to the owner of The Mad Dog Light Company. The answer was, I would rather not re-engineer a headlamp with different colored LEDs basically. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumbsdown.gif I agree with you, why waste batteries and optimum output with a lens. Sometimes things really don't make sense to me but then we all have to roll with the punches sometimes don't we. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I regret that we do not produce a headlamp-only product. Ours is not primarily a plastics house, so we do not have the capability of doing molded plastic easily. We can do plastics design, but it is not our first choice anymore. For right now, we are much happier working with circuit boards and machined aluminum. Our development time is next to nothing that way.

You can then carry one of our white LED adapters in a AA Mini-MAG for identifying lures on your belt and another red LED adapter on your head.
 
Apparently, you can cut the UV entirely with a clear lens that has the right additives. It can be plastic. I dont' know yet where to buy some of that, but I'm curious.

What about for now just buying something like a pair of UVEX lab safety glasses that has UV protection (probably near $7) and cutting out a circle from a relatively flat portion of it?

Well if you ever do, and need a name for it let me know. I've got the perfect name for a headlamp. I figure it'll get snatched up by someone sometime, but it's not trademarked yet. It's as natural for a headlight as the name "Cyclops", but Cyclops is already taken. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/blush.gif
 
Most of the White LEDs use the Blue, and Deep Blue LEDs to excite the phospher - there shouldn't be any UV (<400) in the output

Have you checked them for UV with a spectrometer? I am going to feel more than a little silly if I have been out to lunch on this thing.
