Cutting Mag reflector

Could someone point me to the info on cutting the mag reflector when using a hotlip, heatsink in a "d" sized mag.

Hi Harebawl,

I just use a pair of nippers and cut down like a cork screw until I get to the reflector. "STOP AT THE REFLECTOR"

I use a cut off wheel on a Dremel.

i use a lathe /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/icon3.gif

in the past, i've also used a hacksaw (if doing this, be careful to keep the shavings out of the reflector)

nippers work well too.

I use a hacksaw blade. Just carefully rinse the reflector to get the shavings out.

I use a Dremel cut-off wheel mounted in my drill press. Lay the reflector big end down on the table, rotate the reflector into the wheel, and get a perfectly even cut.

Once you cut the cam off don't you need to trim it a bit further around the reflector to get down to the shiny part's height?

Exactly, same technique I use. I use a Dremel in a Dremel drill press. Yields excellent results. IMO, next best thing to a lathe.

I tried rinsing the shavings with water like Beretta but no matter how I do it I always get water spots. I've tried drying it with compressed air as well. Now I just use compressed air and no water. I think I get water spots because of the hard water. I've got soft water at home, never tried and I assume I won't get any but the compressed air is sufficient enough.

Bandsaw. Leaving up to 1/16th" of the cam tube on is okay depending on pedestal diameter, unless you are using a pedestal-less Luxeon mounting surface as then you would need to trim as flat as possible without widening the hole...

i don't think the very bottom of the reflector is utilized, but it isn't necessary to remove it anyway.

i remove it to the point where it is level with the reflector rim.

Thanks for the answers!!!!, I'm gonna try a DD twak in a 3 "d" body! I will try cutting at the bottom of the cam tube. Then I can always go a little further if i need to. BTW I am using a Hotlips heatsink. Do you guys recommend removing the switch to remove the bulb holder? or do the soldering the leads onto a pr base?

solder to a pr base if you want to leave your mag unmodified and reversable. If you want the best reliable connection, take the switch out and solder direclty to it.

generally, if you are comfortable doing it, it's best to remove the switch assembly. it's not like you're ever going to want to go back to the regular bulb /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Very good and true point Roth. The mags I have now waiting for mods have batteries in them, but I never use them because of the terrible output.
