You need an adaptor that is rated well above 3amps out. The CPAP will pull what it needs. Hook a cigarette plug up directly with the DC line in machine, and use a cigarette plug thingie to run directly to battery, and hook up. CPAP will pull what it needs. Will need a fuse in line. Most cigarette plugs have a place for a fuse.

the sticking point is the male connector into the DC female on the CPAP, the connector on the Rad Shack Multi Adapter (should) fit, and I am willing to sacrifice it to wire something together direct Battery/fuse/Male connector (the adapter is pushing 20 years old and I haven't used it in 10 years). but that will be later in the week, right now arranging community support (the over night temps around here are still in the high 30's), since we have heat, light and cooking, we're the "refuge" for people who don't plan ahead.

If you're willing to sacrifice it, then all you need is your choice of method to hook it up to 12 volts. You could use a cigarette lighter plug, charger-style clips, ring/spade (my preference for direct wire), whatever. I would recommend a 5A fuse no matter what you use, though. That's high enough for starting currents not to blow the fuse, yet low enough to protect against a short circuit. I would also recommend that you keep the cord as short as possible, to avoid voltage drops. It's likely that your cord has some really small gauge wire (22 or so) on it. If so, it's probably too small for 3A of current. Ideally, the best plan would be to find a new plug that would fit in the CPAP and wire up a new cord, with 18 or 16GA wire. Then you could go longer distances (9-12 feet, respectively) without much problems.

well, we got through the night, I was standing there with my garrity 3 LED headlamp in place and turned on when the lights went out 20 minutes early (my wife wants to know how I knew they would do that as I had JUST turned it on when they shut it off). everyone is home and happy and wanting to know about flashlights. Battery/adapter/Inverter/CPAP worked well. thank you ALL for your help and input!
