You're asking the wrong crowd. I suspect the forumites don't understand the rules so they just purchase one (or more) of everything and then work on the trial and error method.
 
Simple rules:

1. Buy as many lights as you can afford, whenever you can.
2. Modify any that happen to break, or down't meet you immediate needs.
3. Buy more lights to replace the ones you modded.
4. Tell everybody that the 54 new ones you just bought compliment the old 72 that you already own.
5. Feel good, and buy more lights.

Repeat as necessary.
 
As with all subjective things, it totally depends on your needs. A hugely bright and penetrating incandescent light (Surefire comes to mind) mated with a more durable and long-lasting LED light that you can carry everywhere (Arc comes to mind) would just about cover all the bases. They each excell in areas that the other can't touch, so having them both makes for a good marriage.

I only use the phrase if I've just spit soda all over my monitor - through my nose. And it's happened - just not very often, thankfully.

Uh oh… darell I was just going to say "LOL".

Anyway the way I see lights complimenting each other is how they are used. I carry a Surefire E2, an Arc AAA and a Photon 2 on my keys. I would say the E2 and Arc compliment each other well. They look similar and the E2 is to bright for close up use and the Arc is to dim and diffuse for lighting across a dark theater. So they work well together.

The ARC and the Photon2 are similar and carying both seem kind of redundant to me. I was thinking of buying one OR the other but not both. What do you like about each?

It starts and progresses like this:

1) Photons (any version)

2) Raven (I guess you like colors and flashes)

3) Mirror Ball (take this from your local dance club)

4) Intelli Spots (watch these things track and move on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire")

5) Arc-charged searchlights (someone here trucks these things around on top of a retired fire pumper truck)

Notice that the more you go, it get's a little harder to carry and maybe be too bright for close up reading...

First off, if you buy both, you don't automatically have to carry both every day. If a guy like Craig carried everything he owned, he'd need a train of cargo cars behind his scoot. But I digress...

I realize you didn't ask the question of me, but around here, you get what you pay for...

Photon:
Lighter and smaller, comes with (expensive and difficult to replace) Li batteries, initially a bit brighter than the Arc, but dimmer for the rest of it's life after the first few minutes, batteries last longer.

Arc AAA: Durable as all get-out, water-tight, uses cheap AAA batteries (dead or alive), dependable light output that varies very little over the life of the battery), protected LED.

If I had to own just one (the horror!) it would be an Arc AAA.

They are certainly in the same class, being bright single-LED keychain lights. They're similar enough that I wouldn't even go so far as to say they compliment each other. That said, I now own four Photon 2's and 16 ARC AAA's. And no, I don't carry them all with me - unless I REALLY wanna impress the babes.

I guess it depends on your immediate needs, although I do know what you mean: I think.

- A Mag-Lite 3D and a 2-cell Lithium go together well.
- PT Attitude and E2, as you say - I think that's a good example of synthesis.
- Energizer Arc White and a spare set of batteries: 'cos you get the CCFT and the Incandescent in one package already.
- Docter 125 and Baton-Lite.

Seems to me to be a matter of a LED and an Incandescent going together well, and both as good back-up to each other.
I think you look for a balance of output and runtime between two well-constructed lights, as you find true to you !!
