That seems pretty low. The standard operating temperature of a domestic freezer is 0F (-18C). If your freezer is measuring lower than that it might be incorrectly adjusted (and using excess electricity).

As a youngster, I worked for a wholesale grocer (Sexton Foods) in the early 70's. We had freezers the size of most grocery stores (or larger). The maximum allowable temperature in these freezers was -20F. Normally they were around -30 F. I might add that it was a great place to work in the Summer, not so great in the Winter, however then, when you went outside, it almost always felt warm.:)
In any case the idea of a freezer is to freeze food, usually. The colder the better, particularly with meats such as fish. I have a separate 5 cu.ft chest type "deep" freezer and 3 cuft fridge. The efficiency of this combination is so much more efficient than a front opening refrigerator/freezer combo (where heat displaces most of the air every time either door is opened), that I don't feel guilty running my freezer at -20F, as even then, it uses considerably less energy.

Heh. I just happened to reread my previous post. From my description, the perspective could be misinterpreted. The freezers I mentioned were the size of entire grocery stores, not their freezers. These were accessed primarily by order pickers, fork lifts and such. "Walk-in" would be an enormous understatement.:)
