Hi,
I've been looking all over for a decent headlamp but have yet to find one that satisfies my criteria. My two requirements are:
1. The headlamp must provide excellent flood.
2. The light itself should be detachable from the headband so that you can replace the light without needing to purchase a new headband.
Situation #2 arises because companies tend to invest their RD money more in flashlights than headlamps. It would be nice if I can detach the old flashlight from the headband and replace the light with a newer flashlight that uses whatever breakthrough LED of the future.
It doesn't look like such a headlamp exists. So does anyone have ideas for a do-it-yourself headlamp that's versatile enough to let you swap out the flashlight for another (perhaps a flashlight of a slightly different size)?
I recently discovered CountyComm's SO-LED clip lights online. Not sure how floody they are, but maybe they can be clipped onto the left and right sides of something resembling a John McEnroe headband.
Another option is to wear a Micky Mouse hat and attach a dozen Photon Freedom Microlights on the mouse ears. Each light could be pointing in a slightly different direction, essentially giving you all the flood light you need for up close work. I've put a red X on all the places that could support a Photon Microlight.
You might look a little goofy (pun intended) but nothing beats having track lighting on your head!
The Mickey Mouse hat can also be rotated 90 degrees horizontally (so one mouse ear is in the front and the other ear is in the back). You can then clip little single-AAA lights up and down the front ear. This setup's probably good for caving since it saves you from having to lift up your head much to see what's above you.
