do you need a star

I am a newcomer to LED,s and have brought a sst-90 for my build without a star attached, is it possible to solder on to it direct. if not how do you attach the star.

1. Thermal glue
or
2. some device (steel wire or plate with circular hole?) to press the led from the corners against heat sink.

And yes, you can solder on it. The surfaces are on backside, which makes it a bit complicated. In practise the heat sink touches either minus or plus area.
