Does anybody have this \"shake light\"?

Found this flashlight on ebay, and would like to know if I should buy it for TPZ testing or not.
Does anybody have this flashlight?

that appears to be the knock-off model sold at sharper image (and brookstone and elsewhere) that uses rubber bumpers at the end instead of magnets like the authentic REAL model.

the new updated original/REAL model can go for 20 minutes, the "this model" appears to only go for 5. yuck.

News item.... The ORIGINAL shake light was acquired by FIRST ALERT, the same people that do the smoke detectors etc. Shouldn't be long till they are in every home improvemnt center in the USA

well, is the ORIGINAL the Nightstar I and/or II? as in :

that's what i refer to as the original anyway...

the ebay link provided in the starter topic appears to be, as i said,
the knock-off model i've seen in various stores. it's crap. utter and
complete crap crap crap. the shaking action is highly inefficient. yuck.

my beloved wife got me one like this as she knows I like lights and gadgets.

Unfortunately it fails a bit on both counts. Doesn't run long, takes too long to charge, isn't very bright (big hemispherical lens seems to magnify what little light there is, though. pretty well defined centre)

The kids like it, I can use it to walk round upstairs in the dark.[Hint, when did you last *need* a light to walk round in your own house]

Oh no, not again...

...I've got one of those suckas just about 15 feet from where I'm sitting. And that's close enough. Anyhow, I've carped about this thing on the forums before. Unless you have a tendency to twitch, shake, or shiver most of time, avoid this light. My kind sister bought me one (and about forty bucks, I believe). Believe me, converting inertial forces into photons is not fun! These lights produce so few photons that you can actually count them as they leave the lens.

BTW, this thing is usually called the Forever Flashlight which is a good descriptive term since you're gonna have to shake it forever to get any light out of it!

I have one of those flashlights. I see how they would be good in an emergency. You shake them up for about thirty seconds, and get about a minute or so of reasonable light. It will continue to glow for about five or six minutes after.

If your not in an emergency though, this flashlight is very weak. A photon three will give you a little less light, and keep giving you that same amount for quite a while. Shaking the "shake light" can get annoying. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/twak.gif I think it runs off of one LED, and is not a white beam. It's more of a light blue.

It maybe great in an emeregency and easy on the wallet, but it won't satisfy the flashaholism in most of us. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

Sounds like I'd better hide the ElektroBlaster when this light arrives, but it ought to be more than enough to avoid stepping on squeaky little rat tails or kicking couches, boxes, scooters, & chairs while on my way to the fridge or toliet at 3:00 am.

Hmmmmm... Lots of "slams" on the shakelights... Guys, they're not designed for everyday use lights. They're specific-purpose lights for emergencies, long term storage, or use in remote areas or locations where batteries are unavailable, unreliable, or impractical.

The Nightstar was the pioneer and after handling the Forever light I can tell you that the Nightstar is much better made and IMHO worth the extra money if you plan to buy one of these types of lights.

For the Nightstar II: In complete darkness, 30 seconds of shaking will (and I do mean will) give you around 20 minutes of reasonable light for close work or navigating a dark complex. The light dims as the capacitor drains, but at the same time your eye's night adaptation kicks in, complementing the diminishing light.

I'll second that...

Faraday-powered lights are NOT for everyone.

But if you do have the craving for one: get the Nightstar, not the knock off.

Craig: the Nightstar is extremely solid in it's construction, if you want to beat on rest room fixtures, it's a good pick.

The Forever Light, however just plain feels CHEAP in the hand.

What I ended up with is a genuine Nightstar with green LED and a pair of magnets inside that repel the "floating" magnet in the barrel, not those cheap rubber end bumpers like the Ebay light has.

Sooner or later, I'll get it on my website, but I'll try not to break tubs, showers, sinks, toliets, urinators, and electric hand dryers with it. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif
