I'm building an apartment and was planning on running a 50v DC circuit for led lighting. Are there any current regulated and dimmable drivers i could use for lighting a room?

Since 50v is enough to drive 10-15 It should be simple, right?

50v in, dimmable current regulated out for up to 50v

I kinda agree with Ken, why not 12 or lower. That way you could turn on 4 at a time for different conditions.

Any particular reason you went with 50 volts?

The reason I mention this is that George at www.taskled.com would be a perfect person to email what you have in mind as far as this fixture here to do this, and these others here to do that while telling him what you think you require and you may be able to use some of his boards with tactile switches or momentary switches to control lights through his boards.

Working with him you might end up with a more reasonable, workable system. At 50 VDC, you better be an EE or at least have buddy that is.....your talking never, never land with 50 VDC.....or at least 50VDC with DC/DC transformers to adjust levels to required amounts for each lighting setup.....

well, 50v because i have a battery backup system that uses a 48v pack. I was planning on running 10-15 crees in a series. I also want them dimmable. I may be asking for too much.

I don't think you're particularly asking for too much. Are you working with some kind of big commercial battery off a forklift or something? What you are asking for is certainly technically possible, and 48 volts would be better than 12 if you had to send power to different buildings around the property.

My thought was that in the 12 volt neighborhood you have lots of ready made parts and components, all you have to do is place an order and let them ship stock items. I think you may need components built to order if you want to work in the 48 V neighborhood. One thing you might consider is to order one custom part, a 48V -> 12V converter right by the battery, and then 12 v. around the house, all of it easy to work with.

The actual LEDs themselves will mostly only need two or three volts to run them, so you're probably going to need to step down your power somewhere along the line anyway. Are there any circumstances where you might not want all ten or twenty lights on at the same time? If they are all in one big series you won't really be able to dim or run them separately.

If you care to discuss it, I would also be interested to hear what kind of wire you plan to run, how you plan to run it, and what kind of connectors you plan to use. I have done some work with 12 volt LED lighting and found that lampcord works nicely from a technical standpoint, but it doesn't seem to be considered proper to run in walls.

I'm happy to discuss. I'm planning to use fused din rail blocks for a disto panel( I have a huge stash of din rail blocks from somewhere). I was looking at using a standard 2pair cable (I think what I have is actually commercial speaker wire rated @ 70v.

As far as wanting less than the 10 LEDs in one circuit. Probably not, one of the main places I want to use them is in the kitchen under counter and in the theater room bounced off the ceiling.

Feel free to hit me up over AIM or messenger. I'm on quiet a bit.

I'll add more to this in a bit. ( I'm typing from my iPod touch)
