I have an unusual design where the DB700 (10 to 12V battery Input for 5w Luxeon) is flipped sideways (in relationship to the LED).
My questions are:
1) Does the DB700 need to be covered with thermal epoxy or does it work fine without?
2) The DB700 is fairly close to the plastic Optics, how warm does the DB700 get - is there the risk of melting the optics while in operation?

Some advice/opinions would be great.

The Downboy could dissipate up to approx 1W of Power and definitely needs to be heat sinked some how.

I'm not sure where the soft point or melting point of the optics is but if the Downboy is not heat sinked it will get very hot and you might risk melting the optics.
