does that really use 5mm LEDs? I have a hard time believing that. But I WOULD like to know what's in them... :whistle:
 
That's simple, a CFL won't ever really last 10,000 hours. I kill those things around my house in about two years, or about 3000 hours. CFL's don't like being turned on and off all the time, which shortens their life.
So really you are looking at $40-60 for CFL cost over the life of an LED bulb. Unless you have a CFL that you are leaving on all the time, then you will get 10,000 hours.

LED bulbs are not bothered by being turned off and on all the time.

They even proved this on Myth Busters.. I'll have to see if I can dig that up...
Only one thing did you post was factual, and that's CFLs get lowered lamp life via off/on.

A) He is doing testing for his work. A commercial application is different than REsidential.

B) Commercial products are 10x better than home store products. IOW, the stuff you are putting in your house are not going to have the same quality as commercial application. (generally)

C) 10k hours max even leaving a light on is HOGWASH. Case in point.....I have a coach light for my driveway. I have a 26W 5000k lamp in there. I took it home from a floor display at work (so it was used). The in wall intermatic timer I had failed and is stuck closed. THe light has not been turned off ONE TIME in 4+ years. 24*365=8760*4=35040. It's lasting 3x the rated life. Part of that has to do with cooler temps and the other part is staying on.

D) anything manufactured will have issues. WIll I get another CFL that lasts 30k hours...most likely not. But, if people did their homework or if there was so much ignorance being pushed into the avg joe, then people wouldn't have half the complaints they do about lighting.


Of course, now that I have said this, I will expect to go home and have no driveway light. :duh2:


CFL's get a bad wrap (in part) from all the misinformation that is out there.Of course cheap-O stuff isn't going to last as long, and that's what's out there for the average consumer. They are not told to not have them off/on all the time so they use it like an incandescent. On top of htat, they are pushed to save energy so even turning off the CFLs is good right?...wrong. Turn on the lamps and leave them on for most of the day in the high traffic areas.


BTW - My field of employment is Commercial Lighting.

Um, everything I posted is a fact.

We've been through this before. CFL's are a fine lighting source, but LED's are a better option if they work for your application.

How do you know how many hours his will last? No one knows that for certain. That's the point. Because no one knows that, none of us can say for certain how much more he'll spend going with CFLs. Wasn't that one of your main points?

And yes, I agree that LED's are better pending application. Just like INcandescents can be better than LED's pending application. That's part of the problem though, is there is biased choices instead of application specifics.

Why did you buy the short bulb Evolux sh instead of the long bulb Evolux s?

Not critical in a single bulb home application but air conditioner savings in high quantity commercial application might be significant especially in a warm climate like Texas.

I was reluctant to buy the Evolux because of the fan. No guarantee the fan would last 11 years when you consider the fan would draw a lot of air AND DUST into a small space.

I keep thinking about the Zetalux 7 but shipping and customs brokerage costs on top of an expensive bulb are holding me back.
I bought a Philips MasterLED 7W globe style bulb for $29.95 CAD last week at the local Home Depot. Unfortunately it uses Luxeons so I get half the light for the same power in as the Zetalux. Also available as a spotlight for use in downlights and tracklights etc. Warmer tint than my Cree based bulbs.

What kind of fixtures/lamps will you be using these bulbs in. Having the right LED bulb AND LAMP is critical for maximizing the effective use of LED lighting. The LED bulb must be pointed at where the light is needed.

I've heard that quote and never said anything about it- but I think it comes down to the quality of the ballast and bulb.

I've had FL and CFL tubes go within a year. I've had one in my garage that gets operated for short and long periods, summer, winter, and in between every day for 8 years and is still going strong.

So any calculation assuming a 'perfect' EOL at the average age for any item is flawed.

Take, for instance, my outdoor houselight. I bought a 4 pack of bulbs for it in 2001. I'm on my 4th bulb. The first one (runs every night from 8pm until 7am) last 2 years. The second lasted 6 months. The third was about 1.5 years. The fourth is still going.

Anything that does not include a user serviceable fan of that size isn't going to survive very long, period. Sleeve bearing or ball bearing- they aren't sealed and they're cheap- practically designed to fail.

You know, it's been so long now I can't actually remember why I bought the short version of the Evolux. I do know the company rates it at the same lumen level as the full version. I probably had the idea in mind of getting the closest possible match size-wise to a regular incandescent - didn't want to take any chances with a LED replacement bulb that stuck out too far. The SH model is about the same size as an incan. Therefore it can fit within a regular incan cover without any special adjustments. I was looking for an LED that could easily replace an incan in both size and brightness, and could be installed with no extra effort - a fairly close replacement. This EarthLED Evolux SH seemed to fit the bill.

As for the fixtures, my former company (I no longer work for them) seems to be leaning towards CPFs as far as incan replacements for the time being. Though they use slightly more power, take longer to reach full brightness, and don't last far as long in practical everyday on/off useage, they are cheaper up front - already many of our incans have been replaced with CPFs. As of about 3 weeks ago I no longer work for the company, though I am still friends with many people in it. I could still do more work for them if I wanted to. But I had been planning on transitioning out by or before this summer for at least a year now. And no, I didn't get fired. But I was able to submit somewhat of a lighting evaluation and an upgrade proposal before I left. We found that UltraLux High Bay Lights are great replacements for High Intensity Discharge Lights (which is what they still use in their gymnasium). Anyway, if my former company does end up going with some LED lighting, it will probably be in the way of outdoor lighting. Certain companies like Marexim do some amazing outdoor all-weather LED panels, that could be used for accent lighting, security, or just simple parking lot and walk-way lighting. Had I had more time, I probably would have recommended some of these panels as replacements for outdoor flood-lights that provide navigational and security lighting to office workers late at night.

Anyway, I'm out now - my work with the company is finished. Don't expect me to be on this thread much more. I'l let you guys hash out the battle between CPFs and high-quality LED incan replacements.
