I don't know enough about lasers to help. However I do know that Dwight Finney has been mentioned on the forums before, I won't do links but search Finney /2 years /all forums. There is some bad and some good, I didn't read it all, hope that helps.

He states in the ad the auction is only for the diode. You would need to solder this in place of your old one and re-align this diode with your crystal set. I also believe you would need to possibly change a resistor on the circuit board but I may be wrong, if someone could help on that it would be appreciated.
 
Yeah, exactly - that's what I was thinking too - You'd have to change a few resistors on the driver board and also an additional heatsink would be good too - but yeah, You have to change the actual diode itself for the upgrade.
 
I've had that diode for a week now, (previous auction),
and as soon as I get off these 60hr weeks I am going to give it a go. Probably just the diode alone at first, then if my skills allow, swap some resistors...Kinda new at this, but I try not to let that slow me down....;-).. Getting a bump over 300mw input on a couple leadlights now
in stock form...Got some more reading to do.....
 
From what I have been able to gather, the default diode in the leadlight pointers is about 100mW full tilt, far more if you abuse the circuit enough. But as it has been covered before the diode dies rather quickly that way.

This diode (300-350mW) with relatively good crystals can produce 60mW easily. Far more if a damn good MCA like www.casix.com produces is used, the driver circuit is modified, and cooling is added to keep the diode from doing the famous frequency shift. Soldering something that small isnt easy to solder. Check my page for a size comparison.

I have had this diode in my posession for a while, never got around to installing it because I purchased a 500mW 9mm 808nM diode about the same time.

Sadly the 500mW diode is dead now. "ALL FOR SCIENCE!" I say.
