Hey guys, I'm looking for an AA EDC light with pretty specific criteria. I've searched for months and turned up nothing, so I guess I'll just try my luck here. I need it to be able to put out at least 200 lumens OTF, though I would accept 180-190, with as close to an hour's runtime as possible; be around 17mm in diameter, max 19mm; have a low of 1 lumen or below and at least 4 output settings (e.g. 1, 20, 100, 200); quite floody (preferably XML) with neutral white output; have a clip; durable enough to stand some urban abuse; current regulated. Rather large bonus points for infinitely variable control/programmability and 14500 support, but I don't need them. Throw is unimportant as I intend to use an 18650 in any situation that would require throw.

As far as I'm aware the only 2 AA lights capable of this output are the Zebralight SC51 and Thrunite Neutron 1A, but they're too big. I will be carrying this in my front pocket, and I'm not a big sized guy, so the small diameter is very important to me. Yet, I would like one that can put out enough light to use outdoors. It doesn't need to be for extended periods of time, so even if smaller lights may get hot faster I wouldn't mind. 200 lumens isn't a terrible lot of light anyway. I know 14500 lights can do that but I don't like the runtimes and Li-ions seem to be a terrible hassle. Besides, the only 14500 compatible lights I know of that are capable of a sub-lumen low mode are the jetbeam and sunwayman infinitely variables, but they're thick.

I'm aware of tgwnn's AAA project, and I'll definitely be getting one of those, but a little more battery capacity would really make my day. An AA version of his torpedo could be a year or more away.
If anyone's aware of RCR123 lights that fit this criteria I'm open to suggestions, but it's difficult bearing in mind the diameter limits.

Here's the standard checklist for reference.

1) How would you prefer to purchase the light?

____I would like to purchase the light from a brick and mortar store. I am located in ______________.
_X_I will be mail-ordering or buying online, so this doesn't matter.

2) Budget: An easy question, but you may change your mind after answering the rest! :-)

____Less than $25.
____Less than $50.
_X_Less than $100.
____Less than $150.
____Less than $300.
____I have no limit.
_X_I’m flexible, tell me what you gotJ.
____Other, please specify ________

3) Format:

_X_I want a flashlight.
____I want a headlamp.
____I want a lantern.
____I want a dive light.
____I want a portable spotlight.

4) Flashlight-specific format/size:

_X_Keychain size.
_X_Every day carry small (2-4 inches).
____Every day carry medium (4-7 inches).
____Holster carry.
____Big enough to need its own travel caseJ.
____I don’t care.
____I don’t know.
____N/A

5) Emitter/Light source:

_X_LED (known for efficiency, longevity, and compactness)
____Incandescent (known for superior color rendition)
____HID (known for max output, but often at the expense of size)
____I don't know.

6) Manufacturer:

_X_I want to buy a light from a traditional mass producing manufacturer that is ready to go out of the box.
_X_I would consider getting a light that is pieced together (for example a “host” or flashlight body from one manufacturer, and a “drop-in” emitter from another source). Under the right circumstances, this path can provide more options to the consumer to meet specific needs, and can often be easily upgradeable as technology improves.

7) What battery type do you want to use?

____I intend to use alkaline batteries (AAA, AA, C, D) (disclaimer, while it does not preclude all choices, these are not recommended for many of today’s most powerful lights)
_X_I intend to use rechargeable nickel chemistry (NiCad, NiMH, NiZn)
____I intend to use lithium primary batteries (CR123, CR2, Energizer Advanced/Ultimate Lithium AA/AAA)
_X_I intend to use rechargeable lithium (li-ion) chemistry. Feel free to specify a size if you know which size you want (14500, RCR123/16340, 17500, 17670, 18650, etc.)
____I want a light with an integrated rechargeable battery. (Note: these choices may be very limited unless you are looking at spotlights)

8) How much genuine out the front (OTF) light do you want/need? Sometimes you can have too much light (trying to read up close up with a 100 lumen light is impossible).

_X_I want to navigate a dark room or read a map (0-10 lumens).
_X_I want to walk around an unlit rural area (50-150 lumens).
_X_I want to illuminate my entire backyard or a campsite (150-300 lumens).
____I want to illuminate an entire field, the neighbor's front yard several houses down, impress my friends and neighbors, etc. (300-700 lumens).
____I want ridiculous amounts of lumens (800+ lumens).

9) Throw vs. Flood: At what distance will you be most likely to use this light? Select all that apply.

_X_Less than 1 yard/meter (reading, other close work)
_X_Less than 5 yards/meters (looking for something inside a dark shed/garage/basement)
_X_5-20 yards/meters (check out a noise in the backyard)
____30-50 yards/meters (I have a big backyard)
____50-150 yards/meters (I live in a very rural area/farm with wide open spaces)
____150+ yards (I want maximum throw possible)

10) Runtime: Not over-inflated manufacturer runtime claims, but usable brightness measured from first activation to 50% with new batteries (Measured on maximum output).

____Up to 30 minutes (I want the brightest [and potentially smallest] light for brief periods)
_X_30-60 minutes (I have plenty of batteries just ready to be changed)
____90-120 minutes (Runtime is moderately important, but still not critical)
____3 hours + (I critically need this light to run on max for extended periods in between battery changes/charges).

11) Durability/Usage: Generally the old phrase “you get what you pay for” is very accurate for flashlights.

____Not Important (A “night-stand” light).
____Slightly Important (Walks around the neighborhood).
_X_Very Important (Camping, Backpacking, Car Glove-box).
____Critical (Police, Fire, Search & Rescue, Caving, Survival).
____I don't care.
____I don’t know.

12) Switch Type and location (choose all that apply):

____I want a forward clicky (Helpful for momentary activation and signaling).
____I want a reverse clicky (For use with multi-mode/level lights).
____I want a momentary switch (Predominantly for use with signaling and short bursts of momentary light only).
____I want a twisty switch (Tighten the head/tailcap to activate, and the light will stay on until the head/tailcap is loosened).
____I want a body mounted switch (near the head, like on a Maglite).
____I want a tail mounted switch (found on the majority of today’s high end lights).
_X_I don't care.
____I don’t know.
____Other, please specify____________________.

13) User Interface (UI) and mode selection. Select all that apply.

____A simple on-off with only one output level is fine for me.
____I want 2 light levels. (Brighter/short runtime and Dimmer/long runtime.)
_X_I want multiple light levels. (Some lights have 5-16 light levels.)
____I want a programmable light.
____I want a selector ring.
____I want a strobe mode. (Blinks to show location.)
____I want SOS mode.
____I want a beacon mode.
____I don’t care.
____I don’t know.

14)Material/Finish/Coating

____Plastic/composite body (this may limit your choices significantly).
_X_Anodized Aluminum – either type II or III (Hard Anodized) (Aluminum, specifically HA, is the most common material/finish for today’s flashlights).
____Stainless steel (durable, but much heavier than aluminum)
_X_Titanium (durable and nearly as lightweight as aluminum, but can be moderately to significantly more expensive).
____I don’t care.
____I don’t know.
____Other, please specify____________.

15) Special Needs/extras: Is there anything else you want or need that hasn't been mentioned? Select any below.

____Red filter (for preserving night vision).
____Other filter colors (Amber, Green, Blue, _________).
____Dedicated R/G/B secondary LEDs.
____“Hybrid” light (bright incandescent combined with long running LEDs)
_X_Pocket/belt clip
____Holster
____Wrist/Neck Lanyard
____Crenulated bezel
____Non-sparking Intrinsically Safe (IS) for use in explosive environments

Thank you all in advance for your help :)

Looks like my Sunwayman V10A might suit your needs. Runs on AAs (including 14500s - very bright!), uses the XM-L T6 emitter, and has the lowest "moonlight" setting I've seen. The V10A is one of the models that has the Digital Sensor Magnetic Control system, Infinite Variable Output Switch- slightly twist the Rotator Ring from left to right for Min to Max output. With CPF discount, I paid a little over $70 for mine at LightJunction.

I did come across that, and I love how the light looks. Problem is it's 23.2mm in diameter, which is too much for me to pocket.
Thanks for the suggestion though.

Check out the EagleTac - EagleTac D25A Clicky XM-L.
Don't know the light myself but seems to have most if not all the requirements you listed.

Thanks, that was actually on the top of my list for a while. Sure is very small. Sadly it only puts out 122 lumens OTF, and I've decided that's not enough.

I too was going to suggest the Eagletac D25A clicky. Labrador72 beat me to it:). Very tough criteria you have set!!. The other one I thought of was Nitecore EZ AA. It's XP-G R5 not the XM-L you wanted:thumbsdow Still worth a quick look. But the zebralight SC51 or SC80 are going to be really hard to beat for size and outputs (number of levels and brightness).

Best of luck.

If the SC51 and V10A are too big for your needs then you should be looking at AAA lights.

Cheers

Yeah, I've been carrying a few torches (cheap ones) for a while now and I find these parameters have to be satisfied if I were to be completely happy with a light. The EZ AA is great but I'm not fond of the brightness selection, it seems like quite a hassle. The zebralights are too thick.. If only the SC51 had a smaller head. Peak Logan and El Capitan come close too but they have to use Li-ions for appreciable output, and QTC pills don't seem good for efficiency.

I've pretty much checked out every single production light there is, even those chinese budget ones, and every custom light I'm aware of too. I'm just hoping someone could point me to something I've missed.

we are both looking for the same thing, but I dont have nearly as much research done as you. Which one would you get that would meet your size requirement but just doesn't put out enough lumens for you? I'd settle for somewhere around 110-150 lumens if it was small enough...

A Quark X run with a 1xAA tube will also run 14500s and is a bit smaller than the JB or SWM lights, but still probably be too big at 22mm. Low lumen runtimes are much better though as clickies don't have the overhead power drain of the infinitely variable lights.

While the ZL SC and H series have wider heads, it's really only for a short section, my H51w disappears in my front pocket, and I'm not a large person.

Well good luck, I'm interested in hearing if there is something that meets all your requirements as I'm always looking for a AA light with sub-lumen modes.

IMHO, you have set one major requirement that makes things too hard already: over 150 lumens for AA light is the exception rather than the rule. You add all the other expectations you have and the chances of finding what you need off the shelf are very very slim.

If you want something out of the box, you'll need to do one thing: compromise!

If you want something that matches all your requirements, I'm not saying you shouldn't but you might want to look at custom-build modded options.

An AA cell is only 14mm thick, whereas the SC51 and V10A have heads almost 1cm thicker. This is great for heat dissipation, I'm sure, but like I mentioned I don't mind sacrificing that property for size. There are many AA lights under 20cm out there, they just aren't pushed very hard.

I would personally get the Eagletac D25A Clicky. It's not extremely bright but it does put out light within your range, and you can choose from a pretty wide range of LEDs :) It's got pretty well spaced modes in between a decent high and a very good low IMO, and doesn't look half bad. Comes with lifetime warranty too. Though you may want to handle one and try the clicky switch first as it may be difficult to use on such a small light. There are many lights with around 100-130Lm output around this size, but I believe the D25A is one of the most versatile. The Nitecore EZ AA is worth a good look too, but like I said I personally find the brightness selection a hassle.

For AAA, take a look at tgwnn's MBI Torpedo. That thing seems set to become a beast with no equal.

Sorry the posts are coming faster than I can reply. I appreciate all your input.

My issue with wide lights is that I carry them in the same pocket as my wallet (front right). So when I remove my wallet, it tends to catch on the heads of wider lights and pull them out too. My 14mm AAA easily avoids this, but my 20mm AA has just a bit of trouble.

I know :( I'm just trying to find out if my grail exists. I'm the kind of guy who enjoys using 1 very well made item for everything, same for flashlights. Of course if it doesn't exist I'll have to compromise. Building a single custom light from scratch, from circuitry to housing, is far too costly for me, and I don't have the time or contacts to get a batch made.

Check out the Lumapower EDC LM31. It does 150 lumens with NiMH and 380 with Li-ion and seems to fit within your size requirements. I'm not sure that it comes with a clip though, you might search around for a review. The AAA size LM21 is rated 380 lumens on a 10440!

It seems like people have luck using 14500s in the Maratac AA.

I don't think it actually goes that high, the lumapower website says it drives the SSC P4 at 350mA, which would give roughly 110-118 lumens on a U3 bin, translating to 80-90 lumens OTF. Some dealer websites rate it at 80 lumens too.
Many lights can run on 14500s, but they lose their low modes, which is important to me.

Thanks for your input anyway :)

Oops! It seems I'm speaking of the "new" EDC series :o. I was referring to the very new EDC LM31 that uses the XP-G R5 and which officially supports 14500 with all modes :D! Apparently you can't navigate to the new series on the lumapower website, but you can find it by adding "XP-G R5" to a Google search.

Here's a discussion about the new series.

Edit: It looks like this new series has had some disappointing reviews (in German) as far as output goes. I'll await Bigmac_79s review before making a final judgement. You'll just have to keep on searching :).

Ah :) it is interesting, nicely sized light. However it still only does 150 emitter lumens, which is about 110+ OTF and less than the Eagletac.

See if you can get a Nightcore D10 in the marketplace. If you use a 14500 it might meet your criteria.

wow the max 19mm is tough.mabey this will help.

I am 5'8" 160lbs i work construction and carried this light for 8hrs.
sat at lunch with it still in my pocket, got home rode my mower for 1hr still in my pocket.im sitting
on my couch typing and its still in my pocket. Quark AA2X
good luck im only poking fun cuz it can be tough when you know exactly what you are looking for and just not quite getting there

I think the results show that the D10 on a 14500 is not much brighter(if at all) than it is on a NIMH. There is a great YouTube video showing the the D10 on both batts. From using both batts in my D10, I don't see much difference (if any) when comparing 14500 v NIMH.

But you get longer runtime on the D10 using 14500s.
